- with CODE (498) Japan version
With model 221, the portable CTEL (A34/6) receives a call signal via the telephone and GPS roof antenna (A2/49), and with model 216, via the telephone and GPS antenna (A2/49). The caller is shown on the portable CTEL display and the information is simultaneously transmitted to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3). The COMAND controller unit converts the signal for the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).
The audio tuner control unit (N93/1) receives the ringing tone and sends the signal to the speaker system.
At the same time, the respective component reduces the volume of the currently active audio source (e.g. the radio) by 15 dB. The currently active audio source is not muted (MUTE) until the person being called accepts the call.
Caller identification is displayed by the COMAND controller unit via the COMAND display (A40/8). The caller ID is also displayed on the portable CTEL display and the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1).
The user has the following options for accepting a telephone call:

Similarly, a telephone call via the portable CTEL can be switched to hands-free mode by connecting it to the COMAND controller unit.
If the portable CTEL is being operated via Bluetooth, a release confirmation must be obtained in both cases via the Man/Machine Interface (MMI) with the front central operating unit.
Private mode
In "private mode" the user makes a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the telephone conversation. "Private mode" is only possible with a Bluetooth headset and is activated by operating a switch on the Bluetooth headset. The telephone call is terminated by operating the switch on the Bluetooth headset again. "Private mode" is also possible in the rear of the vehicle using a handset with Bluetooth capability.
