Navigation, function
The location of the vehicle, as well as the direction and distance to the destination (after entering the destination) are determined with the aid of the navigation system. The data needed to reach the destination (destination-oriented navigation) are calculated in the navigation processor of the COMAND controller unit.
The navigation system is activated by calling up the "NAVI" menu on the COMAND display or by pressing the telephone/navigation quick select button (A40/9s5) on the front central operating unit.

Predictive text input (speller)
While entering a destination, the letters that are still missing are completed from a stored list with the aid of the predictive text input feature. The predictive speller refers to the entry of the destination and the street during destination-oriented navigation. The "Special Destinations" menu is supplemented by the "Bypassing other Locations" and "National Destinations" submenus.

Destination entry
The destination is entered menu-assisted on the front central operating unit and is processed by the navigation processor integrated into the COMAND controller unit. The following options are available for entering the destination:
^ via destination memory
^ Destination entry
^ Special destinations (e.g. railway station, airport etc.)
^ last destination entry
^ Entry of intermediate destinations
^ Entry of address (e.g. zip code, street name, etc.)
^ Destination via map
^ Travel guide
^ Destination memory with individual destinations

Position finding
The navigation processor integrated into the COMAND controller unit calculates the location of the vehicle by constantly comparing the localization results from the following 3 methods:
^ Basic position finding (dead reckoning)
^ Global Positioning System (GPS) position finding
^ Map-based position finding

Route calculation
The route is calculated and then stored in the navigation processor integrated into the COMAND controller unit following destination input or automatically after any deviation from the proposed route. The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor.

Destination-oriented navigation
Destination-oriented navigation begins once the navigation processor integrated into the COMAND controller unit has calculated the route. 3 types of display can be selected for graphic destination-oriented navigation:
^ With a map
^ With a map and symbol display before turning-off points
^ With a symbol display (sign symbols)

It is possible to change arbitrarily between the 3 types of presentation. In all cases, destination-oriented navigation is supported by voice output the over the speaker system.
