Function requirements
All functions are available as of "circuit 15R ON" and Head Unit (HU) status "HU ON". In HU status "HU USER OFF", only the A/C display line is shown. The HU status is determined by the operating condition ("HU ON" or "HU USER OFF") last performed (Last mode). The driver information system can also be switched on by pressing the button "ON" (A40/9s6) at the front central operating unit, with the display being switched off after t = 30 min. Operation via buttons on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) and display in the instrument cluster are possible as of "circuit 15R ON".
Radio reception (FM, AM)
The audio tuner control unit is the central unit of the sound system and of the radio component. For reception of stations within the country-specific radio frequency band, the audio tuner control unit has 2 world receivers integrated into it. Radio signals are sent over a high frequency (HF) line straight from the rear window antenna amplifier module to the audio tuner control unit.
The interface for user guidance is generated by the COMAND controller unit and shown on the COMAND display.
Radio functions are:
^ Automatic interference suppression
^ Automatic and manual station search
^ Last station memory
^ FM station lists (2 x 6 stations per radio band can be saved per "Auto Preset" or stored manually)
^ Separate traffic information station in the AM frequency band
^ Automatic station search for traffic stations after the loss of a station (background scan)
Station selection options are:
^ automatic station search with scan function (the stations of one waveband are played for 8 s)
^ Station search via MFL
^ Manual station search
^ Station selection using list of stations
^ Station selection using numeric keyboard
^ Station selection using frequency input
^ Station selection from memory
Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS)
Known as VICS, the Vehicle Information and Communication System is a radio service free of charge. The driver is provided with vital information by the VICS on the current traffic situation. Traffic jams and disruptions to traffic are displayed on the map and incorporated into the dynamic destination-oriented navigation. The radio antenna signal is received by the rear window antenna amplifier module and transmitted to the COMAND controller unit via the audio tuner control unit. There, the information contained in the radio antenna signal is processed by the integrated FM [UKW] multiplexer. Next, the information is shown on the COMAND display. Apart from this, the FM multiplexer can also receive additional information, e.g. on the weather or earthquakes.
Playing CDs and audio DVDs
The DVD changer integrated into the COMAND controller unit supports the following media and formats:
^ DVD video
^ DVD audio
^ CD audio
^ CD-ROM
^ CD-R
^ CD-R/W
^ MP3
The DVD disk drive is located in the COMAND controller unit and is freely accessible. Apart from this, the DVD disk drive also contains the "DVD DiscAutoDetect" function. All CD and DVD functions can be operated via the Man-Machine-Interface (MMI).
Via menu, control is possible of:
^ Audio CDs and DVDs
^ Video DVDs
Music register
The "Music register" function enables audio CDs to be stored on the hard disk in the COMAND controller unit. Up to approx. 100 CDs can be stored in Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format (compressed).
The COMAND controller unit in combination with the integrated DVD changer provides the following functions along with audio signal playback:
^ "Scan" function, the tracks of one CD or the 1st track of each CD in the entire magazine are played for t = 8 s. After this has been run through completely, the scan function is automatically terminated.
^ "Random" function, all titles on one CD or all titles on all CDs in the magazine are played according to a random principle.
^ "Repeat" function, alternatively, one title or one CD or all CDs in the magazine are repeated.
^ "Skip forward and back" function, a jump is made forward or back to the next or preceding title; in doing so, no audio signals are audible.
^ "Music search" function, during music search, the music played can be heard. This enables certain sections of a track to be played or skipped.
^ "Track list" function, the desired track is selected with the aid of the front central operating unit on the COMAND display and confirmed.
In addition to the listed functions, supplemental information is shown on the COMAND display (e.g. playing time, track list and name of the performer).
