Voice control, general
The voice control system (VCS [SBS]) can be used to call up and operate the individual functions in the driver information system and telephony.

The voice output is implemented by the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit (N41/3) up to 31.5.09 and by the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) as of 1.6.09.

Voice control can be accomplished by spelling or saying entire words via the handsfree system microphone group (A67b1).

Operating instructions
Voice control is activated and deactivated by pressing the VCS [SBS] on button (S111s4) or the "Back" and VCS off button (S110s4) on the multifunction steering wheel.

A signal tone sounds after activating the voice control.

As of 1.6.09:
- After activating the voice control, a symbol appears in the multifunction display (A1p13).
- When the voice control is active, the blower output of the blower motor (A32m1) will be reduced to avoid any misinterpretation during voice input. It is regulated by the AAC [KLA] control unit (N22/1).

Voice control function sequence
The control signal of the VCS [SBS] on button is forwarded to the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit over the following route:
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Central gateway control unit (N93)
- Central CAN (CAN F)
- COMAND controller unit
- Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)

Up to 31.5.09:
Voice input is accomplished via the hands-free system microphone group, which is connected to the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit via direct lines.

As of 1.6.09:
Voice input takes place via the hands-free system microphone group, which is connected to the COMAND controller unit via direct lines.

Speech is converted into an electrical signal by the handsfree system microphone group and forwarded. The speech signals are processed in the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit (up to 31.5.09) or the COMAND controller unit (as of 1.6.09).

The voice output is transmitted via MOST to the audio tuner control unit (N93/1), where it is transferred to the following speakers via direct lines:
