Function
The status of the gear selector switch is read in by the steering column module, which transmits the "engage drive position R" request over the chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit as well as to the central gateway control unit.

Transmission 722.6
The ETC [EGS] control unit receives the request over the drive train CAN from the CDI control unit or from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit, engages the drive position "R" and transmits the "drive position R engaged" information back to the CDI control unit or to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.

Transmission 722.9
The servo module for DIRECT SELECT receives the request over the drive train CAN from the CDI control unit or from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit and instructs the VGS control unit to engage drive position "R".

The VGS control unit engages drive position "R" and forwards the "drive position R engaged" information back over the drive train CAN to the CDI control unit or to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.

The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit transmits the "drive position R engaged" information to the central gateway control unit. The central gateway control unit forwards this information over the interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit. The rear SAM control unit actuates the backup lamps.

Vehicles with code (550) Trailer hitch
The "drive position R engaged" information is additionally sent by the central gateway control unit over the interior CAN to the trailer recognition control unit which actuates the corresponding trailer lamps over the trailer hitch socket.
