Procedures
Remove/check/install Rear Axle Brake Pads
Shown On Model 203:
DANGER:
- Risk of poisoning from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury from brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes.
- Pour brake fluid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.
CAUTION:
- See notes on handling brake fluid
- See notes on repairs to brake system
DANGER:
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
1 Remove rear wheels
2 Disconnect connector (X62/8) of contact sensor (S10/4)
- Model 203 with Engine 112
- Model 209 with Engine 112, 113
NOTE: Defective contact sensors must be replaced.
CAUTION: See notes on installing brake wear indicator contact sensors
3 Drive out retaining pin (41) using a drift (035)
NOTE: Drive in retaining pin (41) all the way using a drift.
4 Pull out brake pad (43) using lever (034)
CAUTION: Installation: Only brake pads approved by Mercedes-Benz may be fitted in sets. Brake pads should be disposed of as special wastes. Please ask local authorities if it is permitted to dispose of these parts as household-like industrial refuse.
NOTE: Installation: Smear the side surfaces (arrows) of the brake pads (43) lightly with brake pad paste.
5 Check lining thickness of brake pads (43) and condition of brake discs.
CAUTION: If the brake pads are worn down beyond the permissible wear limit, the web between sealing groove and dust cap may be damaged, for this reason, check braking system for leaks using pressure gauge
6 Pull contact sensor (S10/4) out of pad backing plate or out of brake lining
NOTE: Replace defective contact sensors (S10/4). Observe installation position of contact sensor (S10/4)
CAUTION: See notes on installing brake wear indicator contact sensors
7 Press back piston (47) using resetting device (031)
CAUTION:
- Draw off some brake fluid beforehand if necessary, to prevent the brake fluid reservoir overflowing when pressing back the piston.
- Use wedge to secure opposed piston to prevent it from slipping out.
NOTE:
- Press back the other piston with the resetting device, not bending the heat shield in the process.
- If the piston is difficult to move then remove/install/replace brake caliper of rear axle.
8 Clean brake pad guide with brake caliper brush (030)
9 Install in the reverse order
DANGER:
- Risk of accident when the vehicle is first operated following repair work due to inadequate braking effect the first time the service brake is applied.
- Before starting engine, actuate brake pedal several times until the pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system.
10 Operate brake pedal several times until the brake pads make contact with the brake disks (firm resistance can be felt)
11 Check brake fluid in brake fluid reservoir and correct if necessary.
NOTE: Fill brake fluid to max. mark on brake fluid reservoir, suction off if necessary.
