Depending on the equipment installed one of the following control units will be installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio (A2), with code 523 MB Audio 20 radio or with code 510 Audio 20 with CD changer
- Radio control panel and navigation unit (A2/56), with code 525 MB Audio 50 APS radio or with code 511 Audio 50 APS with DVD changer
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3), with code 528 COMAND with DVD changer, with code 527 COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code 512 COMAND APS with DVD changer
General information
A distinction is made between the following 2 versions for the mobile phone system:
- Basic telephony
- Comfort telephony
Both versions use Bluetooth technology for data transfer.
To be able to operate a Bluetooth-capable mobile phone authorized at "audio equipment" in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support Hands Free Profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. More information is available under:

The mobile phone system consists of the following functions:
^ Switch On/Off characteristics
^ Establish call and terminate call
^ Accept call and reject call with the mobile phone system
^ Short Message Service (SMS), with comfort telephony, with code 386 Preinstallation for telephone "cell phone" UPCI system
^ Voice control, with code 511 Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer, with code 527 COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code 512 COMAND APS with DVD changer
The system is described using the comfort telephony as an example. Differences from the basic telephony are marked by the symbol.
Function requirements
^ Status "Circuit 30 ON" or "Circuit 15R ON"
^ One mobile phone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
^ Mobile phone system operating error-free
^ Compatible mobile phone inserted into UPCI cell phone holder (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) (A34/15) (comfort telephony) or authorized Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone in vehicle and on "audio equipment" (basic telephony)
^ Enabled Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card inserted in mobile phone
Telephone book, with code 523 MB Audio 20 radio or with code 510 Audio 20 with CD changer
The phone book contains the phone book entries stored in the "Audio unit". The user can use the telephone book to manage contact data (view and delete). Additionally, the data from the phone book of the mobile phone can be loaded into the phone book of the "audio unit" (external data).
The data from the mobile phone's phone book are then permanently available, even if the mobile phone is no longer inserted in the cradle.
External phone book entries can only be removed by deleting all entries or deleting individual entries.
The system can be provided with the stored information via the phone book entries and the connection established immediately. The phone book is activated by selecting the "Telephony" menu, pressing the "Tel" key and then selecting the "Name" menu item in the function bar.
In vehicles with basic telephony, it is possible to gain read access to the telephone book of the mobile phone, if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth profile Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP). Otherwise, data from the telephone book of the mobile phone can only be uploaded to the "audio unit" via "vCards". Additionally, the user can enter or select a telephone number in the following ways:
- Telephone buttons on "Audio unit"
- Telephone numbers already dialed from the call lists
- Telephone number that has already been transmitted in the "Audio equipment" phone book

Address book, with code 525 MB Audio 50 APS radio, with code 511 Audio 50 APS with DVD changer, with code 527 COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code 512 COMAND APS with DVD changer
The address book contains the address entries saved in the "audio unit". The user can manage all the contact data in the address book (view, edit, add, delete and create). Additionally, the data from the telephone book of the mobile phone can be uploaded into the address book of the "audio unit".
The data from the mobile phone's phone book are then permanently available, even if the mobile phone is no longer inserted in the cradle. Address entries can only be removed by deleting individual entries or by deleting the entire address book. The Bluetooth interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna (A2/91) can be used to transmit data from other external devices (e.g. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), laptop, etc.) into the address book. These data are then permanently available as address entries.
The address-relevant applications for telephony can be started directly via the address book entries and provided with the data stored. The address book is activated via the telephony (Tel) base function and then via the address book menu item in the function bar.
In vehicles with basic telephony, it is possible to gain read access to the telephone book of the mobile phone if the mobile phone supports the PBAP Bluetooth profile. Otherwise, data from the telephone book of the mobile phone can only be uploaded to the "audio unit" via "vCards". Additionally, the user can enter or select a telephone number in the following ways:
- Telephone buttons on "Audio unit"
- Telephone numbers already dialed from the call lists
- Already edited telephone number from the "Audio unit" address book
Address entries can contain the following:
- Names (surname and first name)
- Postal addresses (private or business)
- Telephone numbers (private, business, fixed line network, mobile or car)
- Geo position (private or business)
- Company name
For the voice control system VCS [SBS] with code 511 Audio 50 APS with DVD changer, with code 527 COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code 512 COMAND APS with DVD changer, it is possible to provide 50 entries with voice commands (voice tags) The address entries stored in the "audio unit" and the data loaded from the mobile phone's phone book are displayed in the address book.
