Continuous location finding means that the current position of the vehicle is calculated. It is active when the ignition is switched on and is accomplished by the navigation processor integrated into the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3). During the switch-on phase (software is loaded), only basic map matching is available. After switching the ignition off, all important positioning parameters are stored for the duration of the run-on time (approx. 30 min).
As of 1.7.02 the position map is switched on again after the final act of route guidance (destination reached). Comand switches off completely after a shut-off delay of 1 minute. Exceptions in shut-off delay mode: See switching on/off characteristics.
Continuous location finding uses three methods which supplement each other and thereby ensure extremely precise and reliable location finding:
^ Basic location finding (dead reckoning)
^ Map-supported location finding (map matching)
^ GPS location finding
Manual entry of the vehicle location It is possible to manually enter the location on the operating and display module. This may be useful in the following cases:
^ Following the transportation of the vehicle (e. g. ferry or train)
^ if no GPS reception is available at the start of the journey.
