Function requirements
^ Status "Circuit 30 ON" or "Circuit 15R ON"
^ One mobile phone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
^ Mobile phone system operating error-free
^ Mobile phone and COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) switched on
^ Compatible mobile phone inserted into UPCI [UHI] cell phone holder (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) (A34/15), which is connected to Bluetooth module (A34/7) (comfort telephony) or Bluetooth-capable mobile phone in vehicle and authorized at the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (basic telephony)
^ Correct Personal Identification Number (PIN) entered, if set on the mobile phone
^ Enabled Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card inserted in mobile phone
^ Service center telephone number entered in address book of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or the telephone book of the mobile phone as a reserved phone book entry
In order to be able to operate a mobile phone in the vehicle that has Bluetooth capability and is authorized at the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the mobile phone must support Hands Free Profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. More information is available under:

The address book entries are permanently available. They can only be removed by being deleted.
With the basic telephony, it is possible to gain read access to the telephone book of the mobile phone, if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth profile Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP). Otherwise the entries from the phone book of the mobile phone can only be transferred to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit using "vCards".
General
The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function provides user-friendly access to the services rendered by Mercedes-Benz Services through a fixed, reserved telephone book entry in the address book of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or the telephone book of the mobile phone. The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function utilizes the hands-free system (via Bluetooth) and supports the service acceptance process in the service center or, at a later point in time, in the workshop as well, by switching to voice output and synchronously transmitting vehicle data.
The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Selecting fixed, reserved telephone book entry function sequence via the buttons on the mobile phone
^ Function sequence, selection of fixed, reserved phone book entry via the telephone buttons or the keypad of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
^ Selecting fixed, reserved telephone book entry function sequence via the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
^ Function sequence, selection of fixed, reserved phone book entry via the voice control system (VCS [SBS]), with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer
^ Establish telephone call in hands-free mode and transmit data to the service center function sequence
^ Function sequence, terminate call via mobile phone buttons
^ Function sequence, terminate call via telephone buttons or keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit
^ Function sequence, terminate call via multifunction steering wheel button groups
^ Terminate call function sequence via the service center
^ Terminate telephone call function sequence in hands-free mode with the service center
The system is described using the comfort telephony as an example. Differences from the basic telephony are marked by the symbol.
Operating instruction
The fixed, reserved phone book entry in the address book of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or the phone book of the mobile phone is selected using one of the following components:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Telephone buttons or keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Multifunction steering wheel button group
- VCS voice control, with code (512) COMAND APS including DVD changer
The data transfer takes place after an active telephone call by pressing a number key on the keypad of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
Selecting fixed, reserved telephone book entry function sequence via the buttons on the mobile phone
The fixed, reserved telephone book entry is selected via the buttons on the mobile phone or from the mobile phone's phone book. The "Accept phone call" button is pressed. The telephone call is then established in hands-free mode.
The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally in the mobile phone.

After selecting the fixed, reserved phone book entry via the telephone buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and pressing the "Accept phone call" button or by selecting the telephone function via the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and then activating the "TRANSMIT" function, the telephone call is set up in hands-free mode.
The telephone function can be selected with the menu item "ComTEL/Telephone"; this can be accomplished with the aid of the "TEL" telephone button on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and is then indicated on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
Here, the user has the following options of selecting the fixed, reserved telephone book entry:
- Enter telephone number with keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit with the speller offered
- Search for the telephone number using the "Name" menu entry in the address book
- Search for the telephone number using the "Call lists" menu entry in the call lists (accepted, dialed)
The fixed, reserved telephone book entry can be selected in the address book and the call lists by scrolling up and down. The control signals from the telephone buttons or the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally. The menu item is also indicated internally on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
Selecting fixed, reserved telephone book entry function sequence via the multifunction steering wheel button group
The address book or the telephone book of the mobile phone is selected by pressing the system selection key (S110s3) via the selection menu in the instrument cluster (A1). The fixed, reserved telephone book entry is selected by scrolling forward and back in the address book or the telephone book of the mobile phone using the scroll forward and back (S110s1) key.
The accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) can be used to establish the telephone call in the hands-free system.
The control signals from the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the following components:
- Direct line
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Interior CAN
Communication between the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the mobile phone takes place via:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna (A2/91)
- Bluetooth module
- Cradle
Display in the instrument cluster is accomplished by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the interior CAN.
With basic telephony, the communication between the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the mobile phone takes place via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
- Mobile phone antenna

The voice control of the VCS [SBS] is activated by pressing the VCS [SBS] switch (S93/2) on the steering column tube module. The control signal of the VCS [SBS] switch is forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the following components:
- Direct line
- Steering column tube module
- Interior CAN
A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.
The signal tone is transmitted by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit for vehicles with code (810) Sound System via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the Sound System amplifier (N40/3).
From there, the signal tone is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left door speaker group (H4/1)
- Right door speaker group (H4/2)
- Left rear speaker (H4/7)
- Right rear speaker (H4/8)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)
- Subwoofer speaker (H4/29)
The audio signal for the subwoofer speaker is routed by the sound system amplifier via discrete lines to the subwoofer amplifier (N40/9) and from there, via discrete lines to the subwoofer speaker.
Establishing a call is activated in the dialog with the VCS [SBS] with the help of voice commands, e.g. with the following
- "Dial number"
- "Redial"
- "Listen to telephone book"
- "Listen to or delete address book"
- "Open or spell entries"
- "Landline or mobile"
- "Dial"
The voice commands are received by the hands-free system microphone (B25) and transferred to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via a direct line. The voice control of the voice control system (VCS) is used to establish the telephone call in hands-free mode.
On vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the signal tone is transmitted from the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the following speakers via direct lines:
- Left door speaker group
- Right door speaker group
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
Establish telephone call in hands-free mode and transmit data to the service center function sequence
After the call has been established, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit transmits and receives the mobile phone signals and data via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
- Bluetooth module
- Cradle
- Direct line
- Telephone antenna (A2/22)
After an active call has been established to the service center, the user starts the data transfer.
After an active call has been established, the data transfer takes place by pressing a number key on the keypad of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The control signals from the telephone buttons or the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally.
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit retrieves the mileage and the maintenance computer information from the instrument cluster via the interior CAN for the data transfer.
For vehicles with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer, the navigation data is also transferred from the navigation module that is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The data is transmitted to the service center by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit using Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) tones via the same route that is used after a call has been successfully established.
After the data has been transferred to the service center, the user can talk to an employee at the service center or the workshop. The transmitted data is then available to the employee.
The voice input in hands-free mode is received by the hands-free system microphone and transferred to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via a direct line.
On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the voice output is transmitted by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the sound system amplifier via the MOST. From there, the voice output is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left door speaker group
- Right door speaker group
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Subwoofer speaker
The audio signal for the subwoofer speaker is routed by the sound system amplifier via direct lines to the subwoofer amplifier and from there, via direct lines to the subwoofer speaker.
When in "private mode" the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. The system switches to "private mode", when the mobile phone is removed from the cradle.
On vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the signal tone is transmitted from the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the following speakers via direct lines:
- Left door speaker group
- Right door speaker group
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
With basic telephony, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit receives or transmits the mobile phone signals and data via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
- Mobile phone antenna
Function sequence, terminate call via mobile phone buttons
Pressing the "END" button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call. The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.
Function sequence, terminate call via telephone buttons or keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit
The telephone call can be terminated by pressing the "QUIT" button on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or activating the "QUIT" function in the "ComTEL/Telephone" menu item. The control signals from the telephone buttons or the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally.
Function sequence, terminate call via multifunction steering wheel button groups
The accept/terminate phone call button terminates the telephone call. The control signals from the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the following components:
- Direct line
- Steering column tube module
- Interior CAN
Terminate call function sequence via the service center
The employee in the service center or the workshop can also terminate the telephone call. This procedure will run externally.
Terminate telephone call function sequence in hands-free mode with the service center
After completing a telephone call, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit discontinues transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals and data. This takes place internally in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
