GF82.85-P-2012RJ Navigation Mode, Function
- with CODE (498) Japan version

After activation of the navigation system by pressing the "NAVI" button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), the vehicle location, direction and distance remaining to destination (as par destination entry) are defined. The integrated navigation processor calculates the data required to reach the destination (navigation).

In the navigation display, the message "Please insert navigation DVD" is shown if the navigation DVD has not been inserted. This message should help to ensure that the user inserts the correct DVD.

Destination entry
The destination is entered menu-guided on the control unit and is processed by the integrated navigation processor.

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) offers the following options for destination entry:
^ Address input
^ Destination memory
^ Destination with map
^ Special destinations (e.g. railway station, airport etc.)
^ Travel guide
^ Last destinations

Dynamic supplementation
The dynamic supplementation is realized when the destination is input manually. While the destination entry is being made, the missing letters are supplemented by the speller from a given list. The supplemented characters have a black background. Deleting can be accomplished character by character.

Position finding
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) calculates continuously the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following procedures:
^ Basic location finding (dead reckoning)
^ Global positioning system (GPS) position finding
^ Map-based position finding

The navigation processor in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) calculates the most likely position by continuously comparing the localizing results of these 3 methods.

Route calculation
The route is calculated in the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) after destination input or automatically after a deviation from the proposed route.

In dynamic navigation, the route calculation is automatically influenced by the incorporation of current traffic information by way of the integrated FM multiplex tuner in connection with an optional, but for the function necessary external Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) 3 media box. The route calculated is stored in the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

Route guidance
Navigation begins once the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has calculated the route . The following 3 types of display can be selected for graphic navigation:
^ with map
^ with map and symbol display before turn-off points
^ with symbol display (route-guiding symbols)

It is possible to switch arbitrarily between the 3 types of display. The navigation is also supported by voice output from the vehicle loudspeakers.
