Component Identification:
The components with a primary function in telephone mode are accentuated.
The telephone system can be operated in the following ways:
^ directly at the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3)
^ via the multifunction steering wheel in conjunction with the multifunction display of the instrument cluster (A1)
^ via voice control (with code 813b)
The audio source is automatically muted during a telephone call. There are different telephone versions available, e. (e. g. portable CTEL, fixed installation, execution in combination with TELE AID). The portable cellular telephone version (A34/6) (code 854) is described in detail below. The telephone radio signals are transmitted and received by the telephone antenna (A2/22).
When the telephone is ready for operation, the reception field strength is indicated in five increments on the display of the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3). All the control and useful information signals (e. g. loudspeaker signals during activated handsfree system) are transmitted over the Digital Data Bus (D2B).
The portable cellular telephone therefore requires an interface to the digital data bus (D2B) to which the telephone interface (A34/4) is connected. The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) has the following telephone functions:
^ Automatic disabling of telephone card when the Personal Identifier Number (PIN) is entered incorrectly three times.
^ A 112 emergency call can be placed without Personal Identification Number (PIN) or even when the telephone card is missing.
^ Direct dialing of the telephone number with the knob or number pad, display of name of party being called (when number entered is known).
^ Speed calling: The first ten memory locations can be dialed by pressing one key only, all other memory locations can be dialed by entering the three-digit memory location number.
^ Selection from memory lists sorted according to:
-> Memory location numbers
-> Names (alphabetical)
-> List of the last ten numbers dialed
^ Display of call number for an incoming call (if the number was transmitted via two-way radio), display of caller's name (if COMAND knows the number)

Create SMS /edit SMS are possible only when SMS messages are present in the buffer. The characters can be entered in the "Speller" or with the twelve-key keypad (analog to portable cellular telephone).
Transmitting the SMS is also connected to these functions. A receiver can be entered or selected in the telephone book. Data safety, SMS buffer When the power supply fails, the characters stored in the buffer are saved. However, it is possible for up to 4 characters to be lost.
When switched off in a controlled manner, no characters are lost.
Switching back on controlled/uncontrolled
After switching back on, the basic telephone display appears. By selecting menu point "SMS" the main SMS menu can be displayed. In the SMS main menu select edit SMS and continue entry with the "Speller ".
VCS Linguatronic (voice control system)
The voice control system control module (A35/11) is connected to the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) via the digital data bus (D2B) and by an electric wake-up signal.
The voice control system is used for the CTEL control as well as for several audio control functions (e. g. station search function, track change function on CDs etc.).
