Function requirements
^ Circuit 61 On and engine running at > 300 rpm > 2 s
^ Rotary light switch (S1) to "low beam" position or "auto" position and darkness (driving lights active) or daytime running lamps active function
^ Speed < 40 km/h
(without code (494) USA version) or
Speed < 60 km/h
(for code (494) USA version)
Function
In addition to the low beam function the cornering illumination function enables an improved illumination of the road surface in the direction of the turn-off. The cornering illumination represents an additional light function, which is implemented with the left front fog lamp (E5/1) or the right front fog lamp (N5/2) (front fog lamp with integral cornering illumination function).
Only one cornering illumination lamp, the left front fog lamp (E5/1) or the right front fog lamp (N5/2), is ever active. The cornering illumination is always switched on and off with dimming.
While driving forward, the particular cornering illumination lamp on the inside of the curve is switched on. When reversing, the opposite cornering illumination lamp is actuated.
The function, the dimming and the treatment of faults are controlled via the driver-side SAM control unit (N10/10) and the passenger-side SAM control unit (N10/11).
When the steering angle is changed rapidly, both cornering illumination lamps may be active briefly.
Switching on the cornering illumination:
^ Turn signaling over left and right turn signal switch (S4s1)
^ The steering angle sensor (N49) recognizes the corresponding steering angle
The left and right turn signal switch (S4s1) has priority over the steering angle sensor (N49).
Switching off the cornering illumination:
^ If the request remains pending as from 70 km/h
^ Cancellation of the corresponding signals of the steering angle sensor (N49) or the left and right turn signal switch (S4s1)
There is a minimum turn-on time of 2 s which is started when the requests are canceled.
In the following operating conditions, the cornering illumination will be switched off undimmed immediately:
^ Rotary light switch (S1) in position "0"
^ Activation of the hazard warning flasher function
^ Diagnosis
