Function
When the deployment threshold for the kneebag is exceeded, the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends an electrical trigger pulse to the driver kneebag squib (R12/25) in the hybrid-type gas generator.

The driver kneebag squib (R12/25) ignites the solid fuel rings in the propellant chamber (2).

The solid fuel is burned off. The bursting disk (4) is welded on during this combustion process.

The compressed inert gas mixture (argon/helium, approx. 240 bar) then escapes from the compressed-gas tank (1), mixes with the combustion gases and is then routed via the exhaust vents (3) into the kneebag.

In doing so the escaping gas is heated by the burned off solid fuel, whereupon this additionally increases the volume of gas

Under the pressure of the gas inflow, the expanding kneebag fractures the housing of the kneebag unit and the specified fracture area in the dashboard paneling below the steering column and escapes into the vehicle interior.

The kneebag reaches its full volume after approximately 35 ms. The kneebag starts to deflate immediately after reaching its maximum volume. The gas escapes from the kneebag through a filter and the airbag collapses.
