GF91.60-P-2006R Head-on Collision, Function

Head-on collision
The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) evaluates the data from the following components to determine the severity of the impact:
^ Rollover sensor (integrated in restraint systems control unit)
^ Driver-side frontal acceleration sensor (B48/1)
^ Passenger-side frontal acceleration sensor (B48/2)

The following information is also evaluated for recording the situation in the vehicle interior:

Left front seat belt buckle status
If the left front seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/3) detects that a belt latch has not been inserted into the seat belt buckle, then the driver airbag unit with advanced ignition timing is deployed instead of the emergency tensioning retractor unit.

Right front seat belt buckle status
If the right front seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/4) detects that a belt latch has not been inserted into the seat belt buckle, then the front passenger airbag unit with advanced ignition timing is deployed instead of the emergency tensioning retractor unit.

This only applies, however, if the front passenger seat is known to be occupied. If not occupied, then neither the emergency tensioning retractor nor the front passenger airbag unit are deployed.

Front passenger seat occupation status
The restraint systems control unit uses the current assignment to decide about suppression or 1- or 2-stage actuation of the front passenger airbag unit.

Depending on the severity of the impact and the situation in the vehicle, the following squibs for the corresponding restraint devices are actuated:
^ Driver ETR [GUS] squib (R12/1)
^ Passenger ETR squib (R12/2)
^ Passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4)
^ Passenger airbag squib 2 (R12/5)
^ Driver airbag squib 1 (R12/13)
^ Driver airbag squib 2 (R12/14)
^ Driver kneebag squib (R12/25) (for vehicles with code (494) USA version)

Automatic emergency call (for code (494) USA version)
Following deployment of an airbag, an automatic emergency call is transmitted. The emergency call is sent by the following control unit:
^ up to 30.6.04: E-call control unit (A35/8) (for code (349) E Call emergency call system)
^ from 1.7.04: Emergency call system control unit (N123/4) (for code (359) TELE AID emergency call system)
