AR33.10-P-0200N Remove/Install Front Axle Half
- with CODE (487) Active body control (ABC) [model 220]

DANGER
- Risk of injury Body parts may become jammed or crushed. Risk of injury Skin and eyes may be injured due to brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system
- Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

CAUTION:
- When carrying out service and repair operations on the front-end assembly, always take great care to prevent leaving scratches, notches or fissures in the aluminum components. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected
- Installation: Replace self-locking nuts and bolts.
- NOTE: Tighten retaining nuts with the vehicle in curb condition.


1 Deactivate SBC brake system
- Model 230

2 Remove front wheels
3 Install guard plates for brake caliper dust shields
4 Disconnect right front axle electrical distributor connector, major assembly compartment (X62/6) and left front axle electrical distributor connector, major assembly compartment (X62/7).
5 Disconnect left front brake pad contact sensor connector (S10/1x1) and right front brake pad contact sensor connector (S10/1x2).

DANGER:
- Risk of poisoning from swallowing brake fluid Risk of injury from brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes
- Pour brake fluid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.


6 Disconnect brake line from brake hose (39) and seal off openings

NOTE: When releasing and reconnecting the joint between the brake line and the brake hose (39) take care to avoid twisting the bracket. Counterhold using an open wrench on the two flats on the brake hose (39).

CAUTION:
- Seal connections immediately with plugs Do not allow all of the fluid to drain from the brake fluid reservoir
- Installation: Brake hose (39) must not be twisted (Cracking)

7 Press the tie rod joint (10a) out of steering knuckle (5)
8 Press follower joint (8) out of steering knuckle (5)
9 Support the front suspension unit using a pit or floor jack
10.1 Unscrew bolts (40c) from suspension strut (40)
- Model 215, 220

NOTE: Installation: After bolts (40c) have been fully tightened, they must be flush with the suspension strut (40) or slightly recessed.

10.2 Unscrew nut holding suspension strut to spring link, and press suspension strut out of spring link
- Model 230

11 Remove torque strut (18) from front axle carrier

CAUTION: With repair kit installed do not turn the hexagon bolt (18a) When loosening the nut, the hexagon bolt (18a) must be counterheld, as the fixing lugs for caster adjustment in the rubber mount are otherwise sheared off.

12 Remove spring link (17) from front axle carrier

CAUTION: Do not turn the bolt (17a) When loosening the nut the bolt (18a) must be counterheld, as the fixing lugs for camber adjustment in the rubber mount are otherwise sheared off.

13 Remove front axle half
14 Remove upper transverse control arm (6)

NOTE: Only if necessary

15 Install in the reverse order
16 Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.
- Model 230

DANGER:
- Risk of accident when the vehicle is first operated following repair work due to inadequate braking effect the first time the service brake is applied.
- Depress brake pedal several times before operating vehicle until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system.


17 Bleed front brake system
18 Set brake pad application using STAR DIAGNOSIS
- Model 230

19 Perform chassis alignment check.
