Notes on Tire Mounting/Dismounting with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems

Please note that improper tire replacement (mounting/dismounting) may affect the functionality of the tire pressure monitoring wheel sensor and/or it may be damaged mechanically

This can lead to a tire pressure monitoring system failure. The wheel sensor must be replaced as a result.

Note:
In order to avoid damages these instructions must be strictly observed:

The components from the various suppliers are not compatible with one another. In the case of incorrect or mixed fitment of individual components (such as wheel sensors) the tire pressure monitoring system will no longer function.

It is therefore critical that when replacing a wheel sensor and/or tire that only wheel sensors of the respective system manufacturer and the correct frequency are used.

As a rule damage caused during assembly operations is not recognized immediately. Therefore a visual inspection of the wheel sensors in particular after dismounting the tires is critical. Based on this fact it is essential to observe the following information during the tire mounting and dismounting process.

Damaged Sensors cannot be claimed under warranty.

Identification of wheels with tire pressure monitoring sensors:





For mounting the wheel sensors Mercedes-Benz uses a tire inflation valve made from aluminum (A) in place of a steel valve (B) or rubber valve (C). (Figure 1)

Note:
Aluminum valve stems can only be used once and must be replaced in their entirety when changing wheels and/or sensors.

Note:
Replacement sub-components, such as nuts, gaskets, seals, spacers, or o-rings must not be used. The valve stem assembly must be replaced in its entirety.

Mounting/Dismounting Process:

When replacing tires with wheel sensors (tire pressure monitoring system) it is essential to observe the following instructions.

Disassembly:





Warning!
The bead breaker shovel of the tire mounting device must not be positioned in the valve area (1). This applies both to the outside and inside of the tire. (Figure 2)

Disassembly





The bead breaker shovel must be positioned opposite the valve area (1-Figure 3).





Possible causes for wheel sensor damage when disassembling tires When disassembling the tire, the assembly head of the tire mounting device and assembly lever must not be positioned in the valve area (1- Figure 4) and not on the inbound side as well.





The increased bead cable forces of the tire press on the wheel sensor (3-Figure 5) and can damage the sensor.





The increased bead cable forces of the tire can break the wheel sensor in the visible area (2-Figure 6) and/or on the bottom side.

Disassembly and assembly





When disassembling the tire, position the assembly head of the tire mounting device approx. 15 cm behind the valve (1-Figure 7) in the direction of rotation (arrow).





When assembling the tire, position the assembly head of the tire mounting device opposite the valve (1-Figure 8).





The wheel sensor (3-Figure 9) must not be treated with tire assembly paste or soapy water.

The assembly aid (tire paste or soapy water) may only be coated on the rim flange and the tire bead as otherwise these penetrate the wheel sensor and may impair the functionality. Both components should always only be lightly treated.
