GF82.85-P-2012CW Navigation Mode, Function
- with CODE (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)
- with CODE (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer

Function requirements for the navigation mode
^ Status "circuit 30 ON".
^ The cockpit management and data system (COMAND) is switched on, authorized and in perfect working order
^ No errors in the Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna system
^ Signals from at least 3 GPS satellites given
^ Current navigation data loaded

General information on navigation
The navigation module is integrated into the COMAND controller unit (A40/3). The navigation system includes the following functions:
^ Position determination
^ Route planning, route calculation and destination-oriented navigation
^ Visual driving instructions in form of pictograms
^ Intersection zoom
^ Acoustic driving recommendations
^ Display of navigation maps

The navigation system can be used to determine the location of the vehicle and the direction and distance to the destination following the entry of the following information:
^ Country or federal state (for vehicles with code (494) USA version)
^ Place name
^ Road
^ Intersection or house number (depending on data availability)
^ Town center
^ ZIP code
^ Special destinations (POI (Points of Interest))
^ Destination entry via map

After entering or calling a destination location, route calculation starts. The route between the current vehicle position and the destination is calculated. The following computer models can be selected:
^ Avoid highway
^ Avoid ferries or car shipment
^ Avoid tunnels

For vehicles except code (494) USA version additional route options can also be selected:
^ Quickest route
^ Shortest route
^ Dynamic route
^ Avoid toll road
^ Avoid toll sticker routes

The "Special Destinations" menu is supplemented by the "Location surroundings", "Bypassing location" and "National destinations" submenus. After entering or calling a destination location, route calculation starts. The following POI categories are possible:
^ Connecting point
^ Highway service
^ Airport
^ Hotel or motel
^ Hospital
^ Parking space
^ Restaurant

Function sequence
The navigation system integrated into the COMAND controller unit can be used to calculate the data entered for the destination (destination-oriented navigation). To do so, the navigation system is equipped with the following functions:
^ Position finding and destination-oriented navigation
^ Route guidance through voice output

The route is calculated using the set options. If observance of the options is not possible, the options set are ignored for the sections in question and a message is displayed and a chime sounded. The set criteria and options can be displayed and changed. Following calculation, pictograms are used to display the route on the audio/ COMAND display (A40/8) and an acoustic announcement states that "The route is calculated".

If the vehicle is no longer moving on the pre-calculated route, then the route is recalculated. If the recalculated values are plausible for the navigation system, then the modified route is displayed.

Dynamic route guidance (for vehicles except code (494) USA version)
The dynamic route guidance offers an alternative route if there is a traffic jam or holdup on the calculated route.

The system is activated or deactivated or the destination and street can be entered using the following components:
^ Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
^ Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
^ Control fields on the COMAND controller unit
^ Voice control

The signal path for the control signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group is as follows
^ Local Interconnect Network (LIN)
^ Steering column module control unit (N80)
^ Chassis CAN
^ Instrument cluster (A1)
^ Interior CAN
^ COMAND controller unit

For entries made over the audio/COMAND control panel the control signals are sent over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

For entries made using the control fields on the COMAND controller unit, the control signals are processed within the device. Voice input takes place via the voice control system microphone (B25/7). The spoken word is converted by the voice control system microphone into an electrical signal and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit via a discrete line.

For the navigation system voice control, in particular for destination entry, additional name lists are made available in the system. The following lists are available for the voice control system:
^ Town name list for selected town/village names on the data storage device
^ Street name list for all towns/villages
^ List of the relevant intersecting street
^ Town center list
