Symbol and ambiance illumination, general
The symbol and ambiance illumination feature provides the brightness-adjustable illumination of all controls as well as the illumination of the vehicle interior.
The symbol and ambiance illumination feature comprises the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence for generating circuit 58d
^ Function sequence for symbol illumination
^ Function sequence for ambiance illumination
Function sequence for generating circuit 58d
The following signals are read in and evaluated by the instrument cluster (A1) for controlling the symbol and ambiance illumination:
- "Standing lights On" status from the exterior lights switch (S1)
- Instrument illumination brightness control status (A1r1) (continuous adjustment of symbol and ambiance illumination from 0 to 100 %)
- "Night" status from the light sensor (B38/1) (without code (345) Rain sensor) or from the rain/light sensor (B38/2) (with code (345) Rain sensor)
The instrument cluster generates the circuit 58d signal from the incoming information and transmits it to the interior CAN for actuating the symbol and ambiance illumination.

(with code (954) Avantgarde, with code (955) Elegance or with code (876) Interior lights package and additional code (581) Comfort automatic air conditioning)
Furthermore, the front SAM control unit routes the circuit 58d signal of the following control units to the chassis CAN:
- CDI control unit (N3/9) (on diesel engine)
- ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (on gasoline engine)
- Steering column module control unit (N80)
From the CDI control unit or from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit it is supplied to the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) (with transmission 722.6) on the drive train CAN, whereupon the electronic selector lever module control unit actuates the corresponding symbol illumination.
The steering column tube module control unit actuates the following components via the steering LIN:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110)
- Group of buttons on right of multifunction steering wheel (S111)
The rear SAM control unit actuates the trunk lid emergency opening switch (S88/10) directly (model 204.0 with code (494) USA version only).
The automatic air conditioning control and operating unit actuates the symbol illumination of the integrated controls directly and the rear automatic air conditioning operating unit (N22/4) (with code (581) Comfort automatic air conditioning) via the climate control LIN.
The following components are actuated by the left front door control unit via the left door LIN:
- Driver-side power window and outside mirror adjustment switch group (S20)
