Mobile phone system, general
The operating instructions for the mobile phone system are compiled as follows:
^ "Tel" basic function

Depending on the equipment installed, one of the following control units will be installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio (A2) (with code (523) Radio MB Audio 20 or code (510) Audio 20 incl. CD changer)
- Radio with Auto-Pilot system (A2/56) (with code (525) Radio MB Audio 50 APS or code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer)
- COMAND controller unit (A40/3) (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)
The system is described using the comfort telephony as an example. Differences from the basic telephony are marked by the symbol.
"Tel" basic function
When the "TEL" basic function is called, the basic mask appears.
Searching and connecting Bluetooth mobile phones
Mobile phones unknown to the system can be activated with the basic function "Tel", in the "Telephone" menu item and the "Bluetooth telephone" submenu item.
A list of mobile phones already recognized is displayed. This is where you can select and authorize the desired mobile phone. The "Update" entry is used to search for new mobile phones. After the update, it is possible to search and authorize the mobile phone to be connected from the displayed list.
The transmission and reception volume can be set in the range of -2 to +2 by selecting the mobile phone displayed and then selecting the options or details.
Only mobile phones (Bluetooth or mobile telephone inserted in the mobile phone cradle (A34/15), which is connected to the Bluetooth module (A34/7)) are displayed in the telephone list.
Using Bluetooth, it is possible to connect modern communication devices, such as PDAs or laptops, to the phone system quickly and easily.
Connecting Bluetooth devices:
You can access the list of Bluetooth devices by selecting the following menus on the display of the "audio/COMAND (A40/8):
- "System"
- "System settings"
- "Bluetooth"
- "Bluetooth device list"
If the required Bluetooth device is not included in the list, you can search for further Bluetooth-capable units via the "Update" menu item.
Establishing a telephone connection - making a call
The following different ways of making a telephone call are available to the user: It is possible to select telephone number from various call lists (received or dialed) and dial it automatically. However, it is also possible to enter the telephone number manually on the keypad of the audio device, the audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9) or the keys on the mobile phone (basic telephony).
When the "Accept phone call" button on the audio device for the accept and end phone call button (S111s3) on the multifunction steering wheel is pressed, the mobile phone attempts to complete the desired call.
The "Establishing a telephone connection - making a call" function consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Dialing with buttons on mobile phone (basic telephony)
^ Dialing with audio/COMAND control panel
^ Dialing using the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
^ Dialing with voice control system (VCS) (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer)
Dialing with buttons on mobile phone (basic telephony)
If the keys on the mobile phone are used for dialing, the "Private mode" is active.
Telephone numbers can be selected from the mobile phone telephone book.
Dialing with audio/COMAND control panel
The telephone function can be selected via "Tel" basic function and "Telephone" menu item. The following ways of dialing a telephone number are available to the user here:
- Enter telephone number with speller offered
- Search for telephone number using "Name" menu entry in the phone book
- Search for the telephone number using the "Address book" menu entry in the address book
- Search for the telephone number using the "Call lists" menu entry in the call lists (incoming or dialed)
- Enter telephone number with buttons on audio device
The name of the person who you wish to call can be selected in the telephone book and the call lists by scrolling up and down. The call is activated with the "SEND" function or by pressing the "Accept phone call" button.
Dialing via the multifunction steering wheel button group
The address book or the telephone book stored in audio device can be called by pressing the system selection key (S110s3) via the selection menu in the instrument cluster (A1).
The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back in the phone book using the scroll forward/back button (S110s1). The accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) can be used to establish the telephone call in the handsfree system.

Pressing the voice control system ON button (S111s4) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group activates the voice control of the voice control system.
An acoustic signal is emitted after activation has taken place. Voice commands are e.g.:
- "Enter PIN"
- "Dial number"
- "Redial"
- "Read telephone book"
- "Open/spell entry"
- "
- "Select
Establishing a telephone connection - accepting a call
The mobile phone receives a call signal via the mobile phone antenna (basic telephony) or via the multifunction antenna (A28/11) (comfort telephony). The call is shown on the display of the mobile phone and at the same time this information is transmitted to the "audio unit".
The "audio device" in vehicles with code (810) Sound system transfers the ring tone as signal to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). The sound system amplifier control unit (with code (810) Sound system) receives the signal and outputs the ring signal over the speaker system. At the same time, the audio source of the "audio unit" is muted (MUTE). The caller identification is shown by the audio unit via the audio/COMAND displayed. Additionally, the caller identification is displayed on the screen of the mobile phone and on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. A1p13
On vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the speakers are actuated directly by the audio device.
Incoming telephone calls are signaled acoustically and visually on the audio/COMAND displayed".
The following possibilities exist for accepting a call:
- Buttons on mobile phone (basic telephony)
- Telephone buttons on "Audio unit"
- Audio/COMAND control panel
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
- VCS (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer)
Hands-free mode
Accepting a call by:
- Accept and conclude phone call button in right multifunction steering wheel button group
- "Accept phone call" button on mobile phone (basic telephony)
- "Accept phone call" button on audio device
- "Accept" option on audio/COMAND control panel
- VCS (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer)
Voice input is accomplished via the voice control system microphone (B25/7). Voice output is sent to the speakers installed in the vehicle.
"Private Mode" (comfort telephony)
When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. This is achieved by taking the mobile phone out of the cradle during the phone call and thus disconnecting it from the "audio unit". The phone call is retained on the mobile phone and can be continued on this.
It is also possible to continue an existing phone call in handsfree mode by inserting the mobile phone back into the cradle.
If the mobile phone is operated via Bluetooth, then a new telephone call is established in "private mode", if dialing takes place via the keys on the mobile phone. In the event of an already existing conversation, "private mode" is activated by selecting the menu item "Private Mode" on the display audio/COMAND display.
Ending, aborting, or rejecting a call
The user can terminate the telephone call or reject an incoming call at any time. The user has the following options for terminating or rejecting the connection:
- Pressing the "END" button on the "audio unit"
- Pressing the "Accept and conclude phone call" button in right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Selection of "END" function or "Refuse" function in "Tel" basic function on audio/COMAND control panel
- Pressing "END" button on mobile phone (basic telephony)
Telephone book
The telephone book entries stored in the audio device are managed in the telephone book. In addition, the entries from the mobile phone telephone book are loaded into the audio device telephone book (external data) so that they are continuously available even when the mobile telephone is no longer in the vehicle. The telephone book is selected via the "Tel" basic function, using the "TEL" hardkey on the audio device or via the "Tel" menu item in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display, using the audio/COMAND control panel, and finally via the "Name" menu item in the function bar.
The telephone book entries appear when the mobile phone telephone book has been transferred previously in the "Tel" basic function in the submenu "Telephone" by selecting the "Import external data" menu item. The telephone book can be removed by selecting the "Delete external data" menu item in the "Telephone" submenu.
In the basic telephony mode, the entries in the mobile phone telephone book can be transferred only by selecting the "Receive visiting cards" menu item.

On vehicles with navigation, the address data in the telephone book entries can also be managed in the address book. All names with telephone numbers in the stored address book entries are displayed in the telephone book. If an address book entry does not have a telephone number, it does not appear in the telephone book. The address book can be selected in the "Tel" basic function with the "TEL" hardkey on the audio device or in the "Tel" menu item in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display, using the audio/COMAND control panel, and then the "Address book" menu item in the function bar.

SMS (comfort telephony)
The SMS function can be selected in the "Tel" basic function with the "TEL" hardkey on the audio device or in the "Tel" menu item in the application bar on the audio/COMAND display, using the audio/COMAND control panel, and then the "SMS" menu item in the function bar. The SMS's received by the mobile phone are listed. In addition, the SMS's can be deleted, display options (sender or text) and details selected.
