Function requirements, general
^ Circuit 30 ON
^ Enabled Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card inserted in mobile phone
^ Correct Personal Identification Number (PIN) entered, if set on the mobile phone
^ A mobile telephone network available in adequate strength and quality
^ Compatible mobile phone inserted into mobile phone cradle (A34/15) which is connected to Bluetooth module (A34/7) (comfort telephony) or Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone in vehicle and authorized on "Audio equipment" (basic telephony)
^ Phone book entries from the mobile phone have been manually loaded (comfort telephony only)
Depending on the equipment installed one of the following control units is installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio (A2) (with code (523) Radio MB Audio 20 or code (510) Audio 20 incl. CD changer)
- Radio with autopilot system (A2/56) (with code (525) Radio MB Audio 50 APS or code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer)
- COMAND control unit (A40/3) (with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)
The entries in either of the two "books" below are always available; they can only be removed by deleting:
- Telephone book (with code (523) Radio MB Audio 20 or code (510) Audio 20 incl. CD changer or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)

With the basic telephony, it is possible to gain read access to the telephone book of the mobile phone, if the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth profile Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP). Otherwise, the entries in the telephone book of the mobile phone can only be transmitted to the "audio unit" via "vCards".
In order to be able to operate a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone that is authorized on the audio equipment in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. More information is available at:

Operating notes, general
A phone call can be established and ended via:
- Buttons on mobile phone (basic telephony)
- Telephone buttons on audio equipment
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Voice control of voice control system (VCS) (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer)
Placing/ending phone call, general
The mobile phone can be used by the user to initiate or terminate a telephone call to another person in the mobile phone system network or the fixed-line network.
The "establish call and terminate call" function consists of the following subfunctions:

The system is described using the comfort telephony as an example. Differences from the basic telephony are marked by the symbol.
Function sequence for placing call using buttons on mobile phone (basic telephony)
The telephone number is selected via the buttons on the mobile phone or from the mobile phone's phone book. The "Accept phone call" button is pressed. The telephone call is then established in handsfree mode.
The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally in the mobile phone and shown on the Audio/ COMAND display (A40/8).
Function sequence for placing call using buttons on audio equipment
After dialing the telephone number using the telephone buttons on the "audio equipment" and pressing the "Accept phone call" button, the phone call is established in handsfree mode.
The control signals from the telephone keys on the "audio equipment" are processed internally in the "audio equipment".
Establish call function sequence over Audio/COMAND control panel
The basic "TEL" function is activated using the TEL hardkey on the "audio equipment" or the "Tel" menu item in the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display via the Audio/COMAND control panel and then shown on the Audio/COMAND display. The control signals from the TEL hardkey on the "audio equipment" are processed internally. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded via the telematics CAN (CAN A) to the "audio equipment".
The menu item is shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the "audio equipment" via a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line.
The user can then select a telephone number via the Audio/ COMAND control panel using one of the following options:
- Enter telephone number using available speller
- Search for telephone number using "Name" menu entry in the phone book
- Search for the telephone number using the "Address book" menu entry in the address book
- Search for telephone number using the "Call List" (received or dialed) menu entry in the call lists
Activating the "SEND" function establishes the telephone call in the handsfree mode.
The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the telematics CAN.
The user can scroll forward and back in the phone book and in the "Call lists" using the Audio/COMAND control panel to select the name of the person to be called.
Establish call function sequence over multifunction steering wheel button groups
The phone book or the address book is selected by pressing the system selection (S110s3) button via the selection menu in the instrument cluster (A1). The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back in the phone book or the address book using the scroll forward and back button (S110s1). The accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) can be used to establish the telephone call in the handsfree system.
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the "audio unit" via the following components:
- Direct line
- Steering wheel electronics (N135)
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column module control unit (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
Communication between the "audio unit" and the mobile phone is conducted via:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna (A2/91)
- Bluetooth module
- Cradle
The display in the instrument cluster is conducted by the "audio unit" via interior CAN.
Communication with the basic telephony takes place between the "audio unit" and the mobile phone in the following way:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna

The VCS is activated by pressing the voice control system button on (S111s4) the right multifunction steering wheel button group. The control signal from the VCS [SBS] on button is forwarded to the "audio unit" via the following components:
- Direct line
- Steering wheel electronics
- Steering LIN
- Steering column module control unit
- Chassis CAN
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN
A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.
The signal tone is output by the audio equipment via the speaker system.
On vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment actuates the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker (H4/1)
- Right front door speaker (H4/2)
- Left rear door speaker (H4/3)
- Right rear door speaker (H4/4)
On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment transmits the corresponding audio signal via the media-oriented system transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3), which processes it and relays it for output via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Center dashboard speaker (H4/27)
- Bass speaker (H4/29) (model 204.0/2)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)
On model 204.0 the right rear surround speaker is integrated into the bass speaker.
On model 204.9 the audio signal for the rear bass speaker (H4/38) runs from the sound system amplifier control unit to the rear bass speaker amplifier (N40/9) and from there via direct lines to the rear bass speaker.
The call is established in dialogue with the voice control system using voice commands, such as the following:
- "Dial number"
- "Redial"
- "Read telephone book"
- "Open or spell entries"
- "Landline or mobile"
- "Dial"
The voice commands are recorded by the voice control system microphone (B25/7) and forwarded via a direct line to the "audio equipment".
The telephone call is then established in handsfree mode with the VCS.
Communication with the basic telephony takes place between the "audio unit" and the mobile phone in the following way:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
- Mobile phone antenna
Function sequence, establish call for phone call in hands-free mode
When the call has been established successfully, the "audio unit" transmits or receives the mobile phone signals or data in the following way:

- Bluetooth antenna
- Cradle

- Direct line and multifunction antenna (A28/11) (with code (386) Mobile phone without code (228) Stationary heater)
- Coaxial cable via antenna amplifier/cellular telephone system compensator (A28/3) as well as mobile phone and stationary heater radio remote control antenna splitter (A2/53) (with code (386) Mobile phone and code (228) Stationary heater)
- Direct line, frequency switchover control unit (N96) (with code (359) TELE AID emergency call system), direct line and multifunction antenna (with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface USA/Canada)
The voice input in hands-free mode is registered by the voice control system microphone and forwarded to the "audio equipment" via a direct line. Voice output is accomplished over the speaker system.
On vehicles without code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment actuates the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment transmits the corresponding audio signals via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, processes them and relays it for output via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Center instrument panel speaker
- Bass speaker (model 204.0/2)
- Left rear surround speaker
- Right rear surround speaker
On model 204.0 the right rear surround speaker is integrated into the bass speaker.
On model 204.9 the audio signal for the rear bass speaker runs from the sound system amplifier control unit to the rear bass speaker amplifier and from there via direct lines to the rear bass speaker.
When in "private mode" the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. "Private Mode" is activated when the mobile phone is removed from the cradle.
For basic telephony, the "audio unit" receives or transmits the mobile phone signals or data in the following way:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
- Mobile phone antenna
Function sequence for terminating call via buttons on mobile phone (basic telephony)
Pressing the "QUIT" button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call. The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.
Function sequence for terminating call via telephone buttons on audio equipment
Pressing the "END" button on the "audio equipment" terminates the telephone call. The control signals from the telephone buttons on the "audio unit" are processed internally.
Terminate call function sequence over Audio/COMAND control panel
When the "END" function is activated in the basic TEL function on the Audio/COMAND display, the telephone call is terminated. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the telematics CAN.
Terminate call function sequence over multifunction steering wheel button groups
The accept/terminate phone call button terminates the telephone call.
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the "audio unit" via the following components:
- Direct line
- Steering wheel electronics
- Steering LIN
- Steering column module control unit
- Chassis CAN
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN
Communication with the basic telephony takes place between the "audio unit" and the mobile phone in the following way:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna

Function sequence, terminate phone call in handsfree mode
After a phone call has been terminated, the "audio unit" interrupts the transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals or data. This takes place internally in the "audio unit".
