Function requirements
^ Status "circuit 30 ON" or "circuit 15R ON"
^ Enabled Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card inserted in mobile phone
^ Mobile phone and "master control unit" switched on
^ Correct Personal Identification Number (PIN) entered, if set on the mobile phone
^ Mobile phone system operating error-free
^ One mobile telephone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
^ Compatible mobile phone inserted into the mobile phone cradle (A34/15) (comfort telephony) or Bluetooth mobile phone in the vehicle and registered with the "master control unit" (basic telephony)
^ Phone book entries from the mobile phone have been loaded onto the "master control unit" (comfort telephony only)

The address book entries are permanently available. They can only be removed by being deleted.

Depending on equipment installed, one of the following control units is installed:
^ COMAND controller unit, (A40/3), with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)
^ COMAND controller unit, with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer
^ Radio with auto pilot system (A2/56), with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio
^ Radio with auto pilot system, with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer
^ Radio (A2), with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio
^ Radio, with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer
^ Radio, with code (494) USA version (model 204.0)

The function description uses the term "master control unit".

Operating instruction
A phone call can be established and ended via:
^ Buttons on the mobile phone
^ Telephone buttons on the "master control unit"
^ Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
^ Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
^ Voice control system (VCS [SBS]), with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer

Establish call function sequence over mobile phone buttons
The telephone number is entered using the buttons on the mobile phone or to select number's from the mobile phone's phone book. The "Accept phone call" button is pressed. The telephone call is then established in handsfree mode.
The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally in the mobile phone.

Function sequence for establishing a call via telephone buttons on the "master control unit"
After dialing the telephone number using the telephone buttons on the "master control unit" and pressing the "Accept phone call" button, the phone call is established in handsfree mode. The control signals from the telephone buttons on the "master control unit" are processed internally in the "master control unit".

Establish call function sequence over Audio/COMAND control panel
The telephone function is selected using the "ComTEL/telephone" menu item. This is done with the aid of the "TEL" button on the "master control unit", and it is then shown on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8). The control signals from the telephone buttons on the "master control unit" are processed internally. The menu item is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display by the "master control unit" via a low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line.

The following ways of dialing a telephone number are now available to the user:
^ Enter telephone number over the Audio/COMAND control panel
^ Search for telephone number using "Name" menu entry in the address book
^ Search for telephone number using the "Call lists" menu entry in the call lists (accepted, dialed)

Activating the "SEND" function establishes the telephone call in the handsfree mode.
The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "master control unit" via the telematics CAN.

The user can scroll forward and back in the address book and in the "Call lists" using the Audio/COMAND control panel to select the name of the person to be called.

Function sequence for establishing a call via multifunction steering wheel button groups with comfort telephony
The mobile phone's phone book is selected by pressing the system selection button (S110s3) via the selection menu in the instrument cluster (A1) (except Entry-Line). The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back in the mobile phone's phone book using the scroll forward/back button (S110s1). The accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) can be used to establish the telephone call in the handsfree system The control signals from the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the "master control unit" via the following components:
^ Steering LIN
^ Steering column module control unit (N80)
^ Chassis CAN
^ Instrument cluster
^ Interior CAN

Communication between the "master control unit" and the mobile phone is conducted via:
^ Discrete line
^ Bluetooth antenna (A2/91)
^ Bluetooth antenna (integrated into the Bluetooth contact plate of the cradle)
^ Cradle

The display in the instrument cluster (except Entry-Line) takes place from the "master control unit" via the interior CAN.

Function sequence for establishing a call via VCS [SBS], with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer and with code (810) Sound system
Pressing the voice control system ON button (S111s4) of the right multifunction steering wheel button group activates the voice control of the voice control system. The control signal from the VCS [SBS] on button is forwarded to the "master control unit" via the following components:
^ Steering LIN
^ Steering column module control unit
^ Chassis CAN
^ Instrument cluster
^ Interior CAN

A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.
The signal tone is transmitted from the "master control unit" via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3).

From there, the signal tone is transmitted via discrete lines to the following speakers:
^ Left front door speaker (H4/1)
^ Right front door speaker (H4/2)
^ Left rear door speaker (H4/3)
^ Right rear door speaker (H4/4)
^ Center instrument panel speaker (H4/27)
^ Bass speaker (H4/29)
^ Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
^ Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)

For example, the following voice commands or voice tags are available:
^ "Dial number"
^ "Redial"
^ "Read telephone book"
^ "Listen to or delete address book"
^ "Open or spell entries"
^ "Landline or mobile"
^ "Dial"

The voice commands are acquired by the voice control system microphone (B25/7) and forwarded via a discrete line directly to the "master control unit".
The voice control of the voice control system is used to establish the telephone call in the handsfree mode.

In vehicles with the following codes, the listed voice commands apply likewise:
^ With code (390) Linguatronic - English (British)
^ With code (391) Linguatronic - French
^ With code (393) Linguatronic - Italian
^ With code (394) Linguatronic - Spanish

In vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the signal tone is transmitted directly from the "master control unit" via discrete lines to the following speakers:
^ Left front door speaker
^ Right front door speaker
^ Left rear door speaker
^ Right rear door speaker
^ Center instrument panel speaker

Function sequence for establishing a phone call in handsfree mode, with comfort telephony and with code (810) Sound system
After the call has been established, the "master control unit" transmits or receives the mobile phone signals or data in the following way:
^ Discrete line
^ Bluetooth antenna
^ Bluetooth antenna (integrated into the Bluetooth contact plate of the cradle)
^ Cradle
^ Discrete line and multifunction antenna (A28/11), with code (386) Mobile phone
^ Discrete line, frequency switchover control unit (N96) (with code (359) TELE AID emergency call system) and multifunction antenna, with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface, USA/Canada (model 204.0)

The voice input in handsfree mode is acquired by the VCS [SBS] microphone and forwarded via a discrete line directly to the "master control unit".

The voice output takes place from the "master control unit" via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit. From there, the voice output is transmitted via discrete lines to the following speakers:
^ Left front door speaker
^ Right front door speaker
^ Left rear door speaker
^ Right rear door speaker
^ Center instrument panel speaker
^ Bass speaker
^ Left rear surround speaker
^ Right rear surround speaker

When in "private mode" the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation.

In vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the voice output takes place directly from the "master control unit" via discrete lines to the following speakers:
^ Left front door speaker
^ Right front door speaker
^ Left rear door speaker
^ Right rear door speaker
^ Center instrument panel speaker

With basic telephony, the "master control unit" transmits or receives the mobile phone signals or data in the following way:
^ Discrete line
^ Bluetooth antenna
^ Mobile phone antenna

Terminate call function sequence over mobile phone buttons
Pressing the "END" button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call. The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.

Function sequence for ending a call via telephone buttons on the "master control unit"
The phone call is ended by pressing the "END" button on the "master control unit". The control signals from the telephone buttons on the "master control unit" are processed internally.

Terminate call function sequence over Audio/COMAND control panel
Activating the "END" function in the "ComTEL/telephone" menu item terminates the telephone call. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "master control unit" via the telematics CAN.

Terminate call function sequence over multifunction steering wheel button groups
The accept/terminate phone call button terminates the telephone call. The control signals from the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the "master control unit" via the following components:
^ Steering LIN
^ Steering column module control unit
^ Chassis CAN
^ Instrument cluster
^ Interior CAN

Function sequence for ending a phone call in handsfree mode
After a phone call has been ended, the "master control unit" interrupts the transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals or data. This takes place internally in the "master control unit".
