Short Message Service (SMS), general
The SMS application enables the user to manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are transmitted to the "audio unit". The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receiving SMS
- Reading SMS via mobile phone's screen and via Audio/ COMAND display (A40/8), (with code (386) Mobile phone)
- Reading SMS via mobile phone's screen, (with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface, USA/ Canada)
- Delete SMS
- Read SMS ("Text to Speech", German or English)
- Mail inbox list of the 30 most recent SMS messages, sorted by date (choice of displaying either the sender or the start of the text for each SMS)
The SMS function consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence for loading present SMS to audio equipment
^ Function sequence for receiving SMS message
^ Function sequence, call up messaging application
^ Function sequence for reading text messages

Incoming SMS are received via the following way:
- Multifunction antenna (A28/11) and direct line (with code (386) Mobile phone, without code (228) Stationary heater)
- Coaxial cable via multifunction antenna, mobile phone and stationary heater radio remote control antenna splitter (A2/53) and antenna amplifier/cellular telephone system compensator (A28/3) (with code (386) Mobile phone and code (228) Stationary heater)
- Multifunction antenna, direct line, frequency switchover control unit (N96) (with code (359) TELE AID emergency call system) and direct line (with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface USA/Canada)

Function sequence, call up messaging application
The SMS application for SMS management (e.g. reading or deleting) is activated via the basic TEL function using the TEL hardkey on the "audio equipment" or the Tel menu item in the application bar on the Audio/COMAND display via the Audio/ COMAND control panel (A40/9) and then shown on the Audio/ COMAND display. The control signals from the TEL hardkey on the "audio equipment" are processed internally. The control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the telematics CAN (CAN A). Then the SMS menu item is called up with the Audio/COMAND control panel in the function line of the Audio/COMAND display. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the telematics CAN.
The menu item is shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the "audio equipment" via a low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line.
Function sequence for reading text messages
In vehicles with code (386) Mobile phone, the SMS are displayed by the "audio equipment" on the Audio/COMAND display via an LVDS line.
In vehicles with code (386) Mobile phone or with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface, USA/Canada, the SMS are displayed on the mobile phone's screen by the "audio unit" in the following way:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
- Cradle
- Bluetooth module
Function sequence for composing and transmitting SMS message
It is only possible to read and transmit SMS messages via the buttons on the mobile phone. The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.
The SMS is then sent to the recipient in the following way:
- Cradle
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line and multifunction antenna (with code (386) Mobile phone without code (228) Stationary heater)
- Coaxial cable via antenna amplifier/cellular telephone system compensator, mobile phone and stationary heater radio remote control antenna splitter and multifunction antenna (with code (386) Mobile phone and code (228) Stationary heater)
- Direct line, frequency switchover control unit (with code (359) TELE AID emergency call system), direct line and multifunction antenna (with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface USA/Canada)

Voice output of SMS is accomplished over the speaker system. For this purpose the audio equipment actuates on vehicles without code (810) Sound system the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker (H4/1)
- Right front door speaker (H4/2)
- Left rear door speaker (H4/3)
- Right rear door speaker (H4/4)
On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment sends the corresponding audio signals via Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3), which processes the audio signals.
The sound system amplifier control unit forwards the audio signals via a direct line to the following speakers to be output:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Center dashboard speaker (H4/27)
- Bass speaker (H4/29) (model 204.0/2)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)
On model 204.0 the right rear surround speaker is integrated into the bass speaker.
On model 204.9 the audio signal for the rear bass speaker (H4/38) runs from the sound system amplifier control unit to the rear bass speaker amplifier (N40/9) and from there via direct lines to the rear bass speaker.
