Audio system, general
The radio (A2) is the central operating unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle. On vehicles with code (510) Audio 20 incl. CD changer, the CD drive is designed as changer with 6 CD's.

The mobile phone function is available as a separate function description and is therefore not described here.

The audio system consists of the following subfunctions which are described in separate documents:

Vehicles with code (523) Radio MB Audio 20 and code (494) USA version or vehicles with code (510) Audio 20 including CD changer The radio communicates over the media-oriented system transport (MOST) with the following control units:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
- Satellite digital audio radio control unit (SDAR) (N87/5) (Model 204.0/9 with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio)
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (518) Media interface)

The radio acts as gateway (communication interface). It relays the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A and, if applicable, to the MOST (with code (510) Audio 20 incl. CD changer).

On vehicles with code (523) Radio MB Audio 20 without code (494) USA version MOST is not used.

The audio system can be controlled using the following control elements:
- Control buttons on the radio
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
