The status "engine running" or the signal "drivetrain operational" is transmitted by the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit via chassis CAN.

The specified units and values for the vehicle speed shown in the text should be assigned to the possible national versions. The details in "miles per hour (mph)" refer to vehicles with a miles indicator.

Cruise control - general
The cruise control function constantly controls the actual speed of the vehicle without operation of the accelerator pedal to the target speed set by the driver. The vehicle is also automatically braked through active intervention by the brake system when driving down a hill to maintain the target speed.

The CC function includes the following functionalities:
- Variable SPEEDTRONIC (without code (494) USA version): The function variable SPEEDTRONIC allows the driver to set an individual maximum speed for himself in the range v = 30 km/h up to the maximum vehicle speed of the vehicle.
- Permanent limiter:
The function permanent limiter allows the driver to permanently limit the maximum speed of the vehicle. This additional function is suitable, for example, for seasonal events such as operation of the vehicle with winter tires the speed rating of which is below the maximum possible speed of the vehicle.

The following variables are evaluated for implementation of these functionalities:
- Vehicle speed
- Control signals from the cruise control lever
- Status of accelerator pedal

Evaluation of these variables tales place dependent on the installed equipment by the following control units:
- Electronic Stability Program control unit or (without code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist)
- Video and radar sensor system control unit (with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist)

For vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits function- relevant requests via chassis CAN to the Electronic Stability Program control unit. The Electronic Stability Program control unit processes these and prioritizes them according to the respective own evaluated parameters.

Vehicle speed:
The vehicle speed is calculated on the basis of the wheel speeds. To do this the Electronic Stability Program control unit directly reads in signals from rpm sensors.
For vehicles without code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS and without code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or without code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist the Electronic Stability Program control unit calculates the current vehicle speed internally.

For vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist the Electronic Stability Program control unit transmits the signals from the rpm sensors via chassis CAN to the video and radar sensor system control unit, which calculates the current vehicle speed.

Cruise control lever control signals:
The control signals for the following switch on the CC lever are read in directly by the steering column tube module control unit:
- Resume from memory switch
- Decelerate and fix switch in place
- Accelerate and fix switch in place
- OFF switch
- SPEEDTRONIC switch (with code (494) USA version)

The steering column tube module control unit transmits these control signals via chassis CAN to the Electronic Stability Program control unit or for vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist to the video and radar sensor system control unit.

Status of accelerator pedal
The status of the accelerator pedal is recorded by the accelerator pedal sensor whose signals are then read in directly by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit transmits the signals from the accelerator pedal sensor via chassis CAN to the Electronic Stability Program control unit and also for vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist to the video and radar sensor system control unit.

The CC function is operated over the CC lever.

Selection of the specified speed takes place over the controls of the CC lever which are shown graphically below:

Design of the cruise control lever

S40/4 Cruise control lever
S40/4r1 DISTRONIC controller (with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS)
S40/4s1 Resume from memory switch
S40/4s2 Decelerate and fix switch in place
S40/4s3 Accelerate and fix switch in place
S40/4s4 OFF switch
S40/4s6 SPEEDTRONIC switch (with code (494) USA version)
S40/4v1 SPEEDTRONIC light-emitting diode (without code (494) USA version)

The desired specified speed can be set in v = 1 km/h (1 mph-) or v = 10 km/h (5 mph) steps using the following switches:
- Resume from memory switch
- Decelerate and fix switch in place
- Accelerate and fix switch in place

Actuation of one of the switches listed to the actuation point increases the set speed by v = 1 km/h (1 mph).
If the respective switch is actuated beyond the actuation point then the set speed increases each time by v = 10 km/h (5 mph).
If, for vehicles without code (494) USA version, the appropriate switch is held at or beyond the over-center preload then the specified speed increases automatically in an interval of t = 0.6 s.

The cruise control function includes the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence for automatic speed control
^ Function sequence for SPEEDTRONIC

Additional automatic speed control function requirements
^ Cruise control selected with SPEEDTRONIC switch (without code (494) USA version) (SPEEDTRONIC light-emitting diode not illuminated)
^ Electronic Stability Program (ESP(R)) not passively switched (except model 204.077/277/377.)
^ ESP(R) not switched into "SPORT HANDLING MODE" (for model 204.077/277/377)

Function sequence for automatic speed control
Through actuation of the "Resume from memory" switch the last specified speed stored is applied, provided a specified speed was stored since the last engine start.

If no specified speed was stored, the current vehicle speed is set as the specified speed. In order to display the target speed in the speedometer the Electronic Stability Program control unit or for vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits appropriate information via the chassis CAN to the IC.

The following events lead to deactivation of the automatic speed control function:
- Operation of the OFF switch
- Depressing the brake pedal
- Actuate the clutch pedal (for transmission 711, 716)
- Active regulation of the ESP(R)
- Speed v less than 25 km/h or v less than 17 mph
- Parking brake operated
- Gear range is not "D" (for transmission 722)

The engine torque is decreased appropriately if the vehicle reaches the specified speed.
To do this the Electronic Stability Program control unit transmits the request "Reduce engine torque" via chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit. The engine torque is increased appropriately if the actual speed drops.

For vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist, the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the request "reduce engine torque" via chassis CAN to the Electronic Stability Program control unit. The Electronic Stability Program control unit processes this request, prioritizes it appropriately and transmits the request "Reduce engine torque" via chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.

If the vehicle reaches the specified speed in decel mode, for example by driving down a hill, the Electronic Stability Program control unit actuates the service brake in a metered manner via the traction system hydraulic unit.

For vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits appropriate requests via chassis CAN to the Electronic Stability Program control unit. The Electronic Stability Program control unit processes this request and prioritizes it appropriately.

The A/T also shifts down a gear according to the operating condition in order to relieve the service brake. To do this Electronic Stability Program control unit transmits appropriate information about the necessity for a shift via chassis CAN, the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit and drive train CAN to the transmission control unit.

This information also contains a limitation of the respective stage.

For vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the information about the necessity for a shift via chassis CAN to the Electronic Stability Program control unit. The Electronic Stability Program control unit processes this information, prioritizes it appropriately and transmits the information about the necessity for a shift via chassis CAN, CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit and drive train CAN to the fully integrated transmission control unit.

The transmission control unit evaluates this information and implements the request.
The driver also has the option to accelerate beyond the set target speed through actuation of the accelerator pedal (e.g. when overtaking).

The function automatic speed control regulates the specified speed again if the overtaking process is ended.

Function sequence for SPEEDTRONIC
The partial function SPEEDTRONIC encompasses the following subfunctions:
D Function sequence for variable SPEEDTRONIC (without code (494) USA version)
D Function sequence for permanent limiter

Additional function requirements for variable SPEEDTRONIC (without code (494) USA version)
^ Variable SPEEDTRONIC selected with SPEEDTRONIC switch (SPEEDTRONIC light-emitting diode illuminated)
^ ESP(R) not passively engaged (except model 204.077 /277/377)
^ ESP(R) not switched into "SPORT HANDLING MODE" (for model 204.077/277/377)
^ No "Kickdown" recognized

Function sequence for variable SPEEDTRONIC (without code (494) USA version)
The function variable SPEEDTRONIC limits the maximum speed of the vehicle variably from a speed of v = 30 km/h.
For example, if the driver sets the limit of the maximum speed to v = 50 km/h then the maximum speed of the vehicle is limited to v = 50 km/h.
Acceleration and braking takes place by the driver.

If the cruise control lever is switched to the function variable SPEEDTRONIC, the function cruise control is deactivated.

The variable SPEEDTRONIC is deactivated for:
- Operation of the OFF switch
- Kickdown (accelerator pedal pressed by greater than 90% and vehicle speed v less than 20 km/h away from selected maximum speed)

The Electronic Stability Program control unit, as in the case of the function automatic speed control, compares the actual speed with the specified speed. The Electronic Stability Program control unit then transmits the request "Reduce engine torque" or "Increase engine torque" via chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.

For vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits these requests via chassis CAN to the Electronic Stability Program control unit. The Electronic Stability Program control unit processes these requests, prioritizes them appropriately and transmits the request "Reduce engine torque" or "Increase engine torque" via chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.

The CDI control unit CDI or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit uses these requests to calculate driving dynamic parameters, while taking consideration of requests made by the driver, for the engine timing. If the driver accelerates the vehicle to the limit of the target speed, the Electronic Stability Program control unit transmits the request "Reduce engine torque" via chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.
If the vehicle reaches the specified speed in decel mode, for example by driving down a hill, the Electronic Stability Program control unit actuates the service brake in a metered manner via the traction system hydraulic unit.

For vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist, the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the request "reduce engine torque" via chassis CAN to the Electronic Stability Program control unit. The Electronic Stability Program control unit processes this and prioritizes it appropriately.

The A/T also shifts down a gear according to the operating condition in order to relieve the service brake.
To do this Electronic Stability Program control unit transmits appropriate information about the necessity for a shift which, at the same time. contains a limitation of the shift, via chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit and drive train CAN to the transmission control unit.

Additional function requirements for permanent limiter
^ Permanent limiter function activated in menu "Settings", "Vehicle" and "Limitation (winter tires)" in the IC

The function of the permanent limiter can be activated independently of the status of the ESP(R).

Function sequence for permanent limiter
The maximum speed of the vehicle can be limited in v = 10 km/h or 5 mph steps from v = 160 to 240 km/h or v = 100 mph to At about v = 10 km/h (v = 5 mph) before reaching the set maximum speed a message appears in the multifunction display which indicates limitation of the maximum speed.

The IC transmits the set maximum speed via the chassis CAN to the Electronic Stability Program control unit or to the video and radar sensor system control unit (for code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist).

The engine torque is decreased appropriately if the vehicle reaches the specified speed. To do this the Electronic Stability Program control unit transmits the request "Reduce engine torque" via chassis CAN to the CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.

The Electronic Stability Program control unit processes this and prioritizes it appropriately.

The A/T also shifts down a gear according to the operating condition in order to relieve the service brake. To do this Electronic Stability Program control unit transmits appropriate information about the necessity for a shift which, at the same time. contains a limitation of the shift, via chassis CAN to the CDI control transmission control unit.

The transmission control unit evaluates this information and implements the request.

For vehicles with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the Electronic Stability Program control unit.

For an active permanent limiter function the selected set speed cannot exceed the specified speed set within the permanent limiter function.
