GF82.85-P-2012CEA Navigation Mode, Function
- with CODE (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)
- with CODE (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer
- except CODE (498) Japan version
Function requirements
^ "Circuit 30g ON" status
^ The Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) is switched on, authorized and operating error-free
^ No fault with global positioning system (GPS) antenna system
^ Signals available from at least 3 GPS satellites
^ Current navigation data loaded
General
The navigation module is integrated into the COMAND controller unit (A40/3). The navigation system includes the following functionalities:
- Position finding
- Route planning, route calculation and destination-oriented navigation
- Visual driving instructions in form of pictograms
- Intersection zoo
- Acoustic driving recommendations
- Display of navigation maps
The location of the vehicle, as well as the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system after entering the following information:
- Destination entry on map
- Country or state (for vehicles with code (494) USA version)
- Location
- Street
- House no.
- ZIP code
- Center
- Intersection
- S-destination (Points of Interest (POI))
After entering or calling a destination location, route calculation starts. The route between the current vehicle position and the destination is calculated. The following computer models can be selected:
- Freeways
- Tunnels
- Ferries
- Car trains
Moreover, additional route options can be selected for vehicles, except code (494) USA version:
- Quickest route
- Shortest route
- Dynamic route
- Avoid toll roads
- Avoid toll sticker roads
In the Destination menu on the function bar and the From points of interest menu item, the submenus In destination area and Current position are also supported. For example, the following options are available:
- Junctions
- Highway service
- Airport
- Hotel or motel
- Hospital
- Parking lot
- Restaurant
After entering or calling a destination location, route calculation starts.
Operating instructions
The system can be activated or deactivated or the destination and street can be entered using the following components:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Control panels on the COMAND controller unit
- Voice control
Function sequence
The navigation processor integrated into the COMAND controller unit calculates the data entered for reaching the destination (destination-oriented navigation). Further partial functions are described in separate documents:
^ Position finding and destination-oriented navigation
^ Route guidance through voice output
^ Display compass, function
The route is calculated according to the options set. If observance of the options is not possible, then the options set are ignored for the sections in question and a message is displayed and signaled audibly. The configured criteria and options can be displayed and changed. Once calculated, the route is displayed using arrow pictograms on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) and this information is also issued as an acoustic notification: "The route is calculated".
If the vehicle is no longer moving on the pre-calculated route, then the route is recalculated. If the recalculated values are plausible for the navigation system, then the modified route is displayed.
Dynamic route guidance (on vehicles, except code (494) USA version)
An alternative route is offered under dynamic route guidance if there is a traffic jam or a road block on the calculated route.
The signal path for the control signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group to the COMAND controller unit is as follows:
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column module control unit (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Instrument cluster (A1)
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
When entered using the Audio/COMAND control panel, the control signals are sent via the telematics CAN (CAN A) to the COMAND controller unit.
When entries are made via the control panels on the COMAND controller unit, the control signals are processed within the unit. Voice input takes place via the voice control system microphone (B25/7). The spoken word is converted into an electrical signal via the voice control system microphone and forwarded via a direct line to the COMAND controller unit.
For the voice control of the navigation, in particular for destination entry, additional name lists are available in the system. The following lists are available for the voice control system:
- List of place names for selected towns on the data storage device
- List of street names for all locations
- List of relevant intersecting streets
- List of town/city centers
