Component Identification:






Location
One Xenon headlamp control unit is located on the underside of the left front lamp unit and the underside of the right front lamp unit respectively. The xenon headlamp control units are screwed to the housings of the front lamp units. The xenon headlamp control units are connected to the vehicle-side wiring harness via the front lamp units.

The xenon headlamp control units are screwed to the housings of the front lamp units. The xenon headlamp control units are connected to the vehicle-side wiring harness via the front lamp units.

Task
The xenon headlamp control units operate in a master-slave combination and communicate with each other via the front end CAN. As master the xenon headlamp control unit at the left front lamp unit synchronizes the xenon headlamp control unit at the right front lamp unit. The master and slave function assignment is done by the connector assignment or the pin coding.

The xenon headlamp control units have the following tasks:
^ Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
^ Evaluation of input factors
^ Control of functions
^ Actuation of components

Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals

The input factors are read in via the following connection:
^ Front end CAN (CAN G)

Front end CAN
The xenon headlamp control units use the front end CAN. The signals of the sensors listed below are sent to the xenon headlamp control unit on the left headlight unit for calculating the vehicle speed and vehicle level:
- From ESP control unit (N47-5) (except model 221.095/195 or from regenerative braking system control unit (N30/6) (on model 221.095/195):
- Left front rpm sensor (L6/1)
- Right front rpm sensor (L6/2)
- Left rear rpm sensor (L6/3)
- Right rear rpm sensor (L6/4)

- From the AIRmatic with ADS control unit (N51)
(vehicles without code (487) Active Body Control (ABC)):
- Left front level sensor (B22/8)
- Right front level sensor (B22/9)
- Rear axle level sensor (B22/3)

- From the ABC control unit (N51/2)
(vehicles with code (487) Active Body Control (ABC)):
- Left front level sensor
- Right front level sensor
- Left rear level sensor (B22/7)
- Right rear level sensor (B22/10)

Evaluation of input factors
The input factors read in via the front end CAN are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor whereupon the corresponding components are then actuated.

Control of functions

The following functions are realized by actuating the appropriate components:
- Low beam
- Main beam
- Automatic headlamp range adjustment (HRA [LWR])
- Cornering illumination (with code (619) Cornering illumination)
- Dynamic curve illumination (model 216, model 221 up to 31.5.09,
model 221 as of 1.6.09 with code (615) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integral curve illumination or code (616) Bi-xenon headlamp unit with integral asymmetrical curve illumination or code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) or code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic))

- Active light distribution.

The following components are actuated by the xenon headlamp control unit at the left front lamp unit via a direct line:
- Left bi-xenon light with integrated ignition module (E1e10)
- Left high beam solenoid (E1I1)
