GF82.61-P-4003QMJ Dynamic Route Guidance, Function
- with CODE (498) Japanese version

The dynamic route guidance automatically takes into account each current message about the traffic situation provided by the relevant traffic information service. To do this, the system uses the traffic information from regional providers. The driver can therefore receive information about the current traffic situation from the vehicle information and communication system (VICS).

Dynamic route guidance, function
The incoming information about the traffic situation is transferred by means of special signals. These can be sent as FM signals or infrared signals. The FM or infrared receivers installed on the vehicle receive and decode the signals of the VICS 3 media box (traffic data recorder).

The antenna signal of the VICS antenna splitter (A28/10) is passed over a coaxial line directly to the internal VICS of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), where the information in the signal is conditioned. The depiction then appears on the map on the display.

The VICS 3 media box for dynamic route guidance is an optional extra that may be installed by dealers. The interface for connecting the VICS 3 media box, however, is preinstalled in the vehicle at the plant.

Without the external VICS 3 media box, the internal VICS is not suitable for dynamic route guidance.

The traffic data recorder decodes and selects the traffic messages relating to the selected stretch and the surrounding area and forwards them to the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) on request. Notification that the route has been recalculated taking traffic messages into consideration, is provided.

Traffic radio, function
Signs installed next to roads and freeways inform road users which regional radio stations (with a fixed broadcast frequency) broadcast traffic information.
The driver can press the "Traffic Information" button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) in different regions to hear the local traffic information.

Traffic information is only broadcast regionally and not nationally. It is therefore difficult to create a complete and up-to-date list of traffic jams. Dynamic route guidance is therefore not always possible.

The traffic information stored in the traffic data recorder is deleted automatically after 30 minutes. A maximum of 100 messages can be stored.

The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) decides whether or not the route should be changed. The decision is based above all on the route selection that has been entered.

The traffic data recorder requires an up-to-date "location list" from the navigation processor in order to correct the route. Each stretch of road and each striking feature (e.g. expressway exit) of the road network detected is clearly defined by means of a number. The "location list" is originally stored on the navigation digital versatile disk (DVD).
The decoded traffic messages are marked on the map using suitable symbols. They can also be displayed as clear text.
