Continuous position finding, function
Continuous position finding is understood to refer to calculation of the vehicle's position at any given time. It is active when the ignition is switched on (circuit 15 On) and is performed by the navigation processor integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3). During the switch-on phase (software is loaded), only the basic position finding (composite positioning) is available. After switching off the ignition (circuit 15 OFF) all the vital positioning parameters are stored for the duration of the run on time (approx. 30 min).

Continuous position finding uses the following 3 methods, which mutually complement each other and thus ensure very accurate and reliable position finding:
^ Basic position finding (dead reckoning)
^ Map-based position finding
^ Global positioning system (GPS) - satellite position finding

It is possible to enter the location manually on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3). This may be useful after the vehicle has been transported (e.g. by ferry or train) or if there was no GPS reception at the start of the journey.
