Moderately severe head-on collision
If a moderately severe head-on collision occurs, the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) receives signals via a discrete line from the driver-side frontal acceleration sensor (B48/1) and the passenger-side frontal acceleration sensor (B48/2) indicating moderate deceleration. In this type of impact the seat belt restraining system function in combination with the buckle emergency tensioning retractors provides the best possible level of passenger safety.
Thus, the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends a pulse to:
^ Driver ETR [GUS] squib (R12/1)
^ Front passenger ETR [GUS] squib (R12/2) (depending on seat occupancy)
^ left rear ETR squib (R12/6)
^ right rear ETR squib (R12/7)

Severe head-on collision
If a severe head-on collision occurs, the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) receives signals via a discrete line from the driver-side frontal acceleration sensor (B48/1) and the passenger-side frontal acceleration sensor (B48/2) indicating severe deceleration. In this type of impact the airbag and seat belt system restraining functions in combination with the emergency tensioning retractors ensure the best possible degree of passenger safety. Thus, the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends a pulse to:
^ Driver airbag squib 1 (R12/13)
^ Front passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4) depending on seat occupancy)
^ Driver ETR [GUS] squib (R12/1)
^ Front passenger ETR [GUS] squib (R12/2) (depending on seat occupancy)
^ left rear ETR squib (R12/6)
^ right rear ETR squib (R12/7)

If also necessary because of the severity of the accident:
^ driver airbag squib 2 (R12/14)
^ front passenger airbag squib 2 (R12/5) (depending on seat occupancy)

If the WSS (Weight Sensing System) control unit (N2/13) has detected that the front passenger seat is unoccupied or occupied by a child seat, the front passenger airbag is never deployed.

If the driver seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/3) or the front passenger seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/4) detects that a seat belt is not buckled, the driver or front passenger airbag is deployed with brought-forward ignition timing instead of the respective emergency tensioning retractor.
