Component Identification:





Remove
1 Check that the upper steering shaft is fully retracted or in the center position.
2.1 Move upper steering shaft to center position.

If fore/aft adjustment motor (M20m1) is still operational.

3.1 Establish electrical connection between connector (1) of fore/aft adjustment motor (M20m1) and a vehicle battery.

If fore/aft adjustment motor (M20m1) is still operational.

Swap the terminals to change the direction of rotation of the fore/aft adjustment motor (M20m1).

4.1 Detach slider (77) from jacket tube.

If fore/aft adjustment motor (M20m1) is defective and if upper steering shaft has been extended past center position.

Unscrew screws (2) for this step.

Component Identification:





5 Unscrew nut (62a) from link rod (62) on upper steering shaft bracket (70g).
6 Fit upper steering shaft (70g) on connecting piece of lower steering shaft (arrow) using a suitable tool (077) and drive out until the link rod (62) is extended out of the bracket (70h).

Avoid damaging connecting piece of lower steering shaft.

7 Detach fore/aft adjustment motor (M20m1) and remove.

If the slider (77) was detached, the upper steering shaft (70g) may be driven out by no more than max. 85 mm.If it is driven out further, the thrust piece may fall into the inside of the jacket tube and damage (score) the surface. A whole new jacket tube (71) must then be installed.

Install
8 Attach fore/aft adjustment motor (M20m1) with link rod (62) to jacket tube. The arch in the link rod (arrow) must point towards the jacket tube (71).
9 Fit bolts for fore/aft adjustment motor (M20m1) and tighten in the specified sequence (1 to 4)

10 Drive in upper steering shaft (70g) using a suitable sleeve (077) until the link rod (62) is fully inserted into the bracket (70h).
11 Install new self-locking nut (62a) on link rod (62) and tighten.

Component Identification:





12.1 Attach slider (77).
If slider (77) was removed.

It must be easy to insert the slider (77) Groove and spring must match, turn steering shaft slightly if necessary.
13 Adjust dimension (x) by establishing an electrical connection if necessary.
14 Tighten nut (62b) on link rod (62).
