Component Identification:
Function requirements:
^ Power supply okay
^ Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) active
^ Portable CTEL placed in UPCI portable CTEL holder
^ Enabled Subscriber Identification Module SIM) card inserted (in portable CTEL
^ Correct Personal Identification Number (PIN) entered and successful login to relevant service provider network
With the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system all calls are made with the portable CTEL using the hands-free system. "Private mode" is not possible.
With the UPCI control unit it is possible to operate different portable CTELs such as Nokia, Siemens and Motorola in the vehicle.
This is done by installing the relevant UPCI portable CTEL holder. Equipment with Bluetooth capability can also be (up to 31.5.06) operated (except Code (494) USA version).
The UPCI system consists of the following components:
^ UPCI control unit
^ UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder in vehicles with code (388) Telephone "Handy", UPCI system
^ Telephone antenna
^ Telephone/portable CTEL/STH radio remote control antenna splitter
^ E-net compensator
^ Portable CTEL in vehicles with code (388) Telephone "Handy", UPCI System
^ Hands-free system microphone group
^ Bluetooth antenna (up to 31.5.06) (except code (494) USA version)
^ Radio, or radio control panel and navigation unit, or COMAND operating, display and controller unit (depending on country specific equipment)
The respective portable CTEL is connected to the vehicle MOST bus by the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder and the UPCI [UHI] control unit.
The UPCI [UHI] system contains the following functions:
^ Set up telephone connections in handsfree mode.
^ Display telephone numbers and caller ID.
^ Display stored telephone numbers from the portable CTEL in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster
^ Voice control via the Voice control system (VCS) in vehicles with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
^ Select menu item "TEL" with the system selection button (S110s3) and scroll (telephone book function) with the scroll forward/back button (S110s1) on the Multifunction steering wheel (MFL).
Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is only available using the portable CTEL.
The UPCI [UHI] system is activated using the On/Off button on the portable CTEL. As soon as the MOST has been activated, the portable CTEL is also ready for operation. The UPCI [UHI] system is deactivated using the On/Off button of the portable CTEL or, automatically after the run-on time set on the portable CTEL. In vehicles with code (813) Voice Control System (VCS [SBS]) the voice input takes place using the hands-free system microphone group. Voice output is accomplished over the audio speaker system. In order to ensure that the user voice input via the hands- free system microphone group is as clear as possible, active audio sources such as the CD changer (A2/6), are automatically muted during a telephone call. The volume of the speaker system can be adjusted as desired by the user. This can be done via the buttons that are integrated in the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) (buttons + and - for setting specific functions and volume control) or S111s1 via the portable CTEL.
The following functions can be activated using the buttons in the MFL:
^ Scroll forward/back button
Calling up the telephone menu
^ System selection button
Opening the portable CTEL telephone book and navigating through the name selection
^ Accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) Making/terminating a telephone connection
^ + and - buttons for setting of specific functions and volume control
Adjust voice output volume
Changes and settings that indicate the operating condition of the portable CTEL to the user (e.g. "ENTER PIN") appear on the displays of the following components :
^ Portable cellular telephone
^ Instrument cluster
^ Radio, radio control panel and navigation unit or COMAND operating, display and control unit
The UPCI [UHI] system is compatible with the D-net and the E-net. This is made possible by installing the E-net compensator, which compensates for the damping that occurs because of the higher transmit frequency of the E-net.
