By folding down the rear head restraints, the driver is able to create unimpeded visibility through the rear window as needed.
If the rear head restraints switch is pressed on the upper control panel control unit, the rear SAM control unit receives a CAN message via the interior CAN to lower the rear head restraints. The rear SAM control unit relays this CAN message as an electrical signal to the left rear head restraint motor and the right rear head restraint motor (M53/2). The head restraints are then released and lowered toward the rear using a lever mechanism. When the contact is interrupted via the head restraint lowering mechanism switch, the CAN message is canceled. The lift of the motors is 13 mm in t = 400 ms with actuating force of 50 N. The head restraints can only be raised by hand. The head restraints must be pushed upwards until they engage.
