Set Play Between Thrust Piece And Steering Rack
DANGER:
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the hydraulic hoist and position the four support plates below the hoist support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
1 Remove rack-and-pinion steering
2 Mount steering on steering housing support
WARNING:
- During the following operations pay attention to the utmost cleanliness at the workplace and while carrying out the repair
- Only the specified tool may be used
- Before starting the repair remove the loose contamination from the steering gear without using any cleaning agent
3 Remove inner clamps on the two bellows
NOTE: Installation: Replace inner clamps.
4 Press the outer clamps together and shift bellows towards the tie rod end
5 Detach inner tie rod with axial joint
CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, severe leverage) otherwise inner tie rod with axial joint will be damaged.
NOTE: Detach the left and right side.
Secure rack (4) to prevent it from turning, counterhold using a 22 mm open wrench.
6 Screw the stop plate (1) into the rack on the left and right (4)
7 Grease rack (4)
8 Move the rack (4) from end to end several times
NOTE: Move the rack (4) back Into the center position.
9 Pull the rubber plug out of the adjusting screw (2)
NOTE: Pull out carefully as the rubber plug can easily be damaged.
10 Attach the bracket and dial gauge to the steering gear above the adjusting screw (2)
11 By means of the dial gauge check the play between the rack (4) and thrust piece (3)
NOTE:
- If the play is less than 0.3 mm, it must be adjusted.
- If the play Is 0.3 to 0.6 mm, the thrust piece must be replaced.
- If the play Is more than 0.6 mm, the rack-and-pinion steering must be replaced Twist the rack (4) in the direction of the arrow.
12 Remove dial gauge with bracket
13 Unscrew adjusting screw (2)
14 Remove spring
15 Remove thrust piece (3) with pliers
CAUTION: The slide blocks can be left in the rack (4), otherwise the rack (4) will be damaged.
16 Insert new thrust piece (3)
NOTE: Grease slide blocks and outer edge of thrust piece (3).
17 Insert spring
NOTE: Grease spring.
18 Tighten adjusting screw (2)
NOTE: Tighten adjusting screw (2) securely. Grease thread of adjusting screw (2).
19 Loosen adjusting screw (2) approx. 1/8 revolution
20 Attach the bracket and dial gauge to the steering gear above the adjusting screw (2)
21 By means of the dial gauge check the play between the rack (4) and thrust piece (3)
NOTE:
- If the play is still below tolerance, loosen the adjusting screw (2) again slightly. If the play is above the tolerance, the adjustment must be repeated.
- Twist the rack (4) in the direction of the arrow.
22 Remove dial gauge with bracket
23 Move the rack (4) from end to end several times
NOTE: It must be possible to move the rack (4) easily from end to end.
24 Secure the adjusting screw (2) with three center punch marks.
25 Install in the reverse order
26 Check and adjust toe on front axle
