Function of Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS)
(Traffic information system in Japan)
The current traffic situation is taken into consideration in the dynamic route guidance.
Incoming information on the traffic situation is transmitted via beacons (special masts). The information can be transmitted as FM or infrared signal. The FM or infrared receivers installed on the vehicle receive and decode the signals of the VICS 3 media box (traffic data recorder). This information on the current traffic situation is sent out on an area-related basis by a specially equipped broadcasting station.
The traffic messages are stored and supplied to the navigation processor.
The VICS 3 media box for dynamic route guidance is a dealer option in Japan.
As in the case of VICS messages no communication takes place between the vehicle and the broadcasting station, the traffic data recorder selects the traffic messages which concern the stretch just driven on as well as the surrounding area.
Traffic information analysis
The traffic data memory decodes the traffic information and transmits it to the navigation processor on request (internal). The navigation processor makes the decision whether the route should be changed.
If necessary a communication follows over the vehicle speakers that the route has been changed.
For synchronization tasks the traffic data recorder requires an up-to-date "location list" from the navigation computer. In this list every stretch and every significant point (e.g. highway exit) on the recorded road network is identified by a unique number. This list is originally stored on the digital versatile disk (DVD).
If required (e.g. changing the DVD) it is automatically loaded into the traffic data recorder. The traffic information stored in the traffic data recorder is erased automatically after approx. 30 min, a maximum of 100 messages can be stored.
Furthermore, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) is equipped with an internal VICS. From the radio antennas the traffic announcements enter the FM multiplexer of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) via the radio coaxial cable.
There they are decoded and clearly indicated by the appropriate symbols on the map in the display. They can also be displayed as plain text.
The internal VICS without the external VICS 3 media box (dealer option) is not suitable for dynamic route guidance.
Traffic reports relevant to the route are, for example:
^ Road blocked
^ Jam
^ Slow-moving traffic
^ Heavy traffic
^ Light traffic
^ Road works
^ Trouble-free traffic
