Function
Following the request, e.g. by the radio control panel and navigation unit, the telephone radio signals are sent and received via the telephone antenna (A2/49a1) by the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1). In portable CTEL mode, the signals are transmitted via the E-net compensator (A28/3) to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit and from there to the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface). The task of the E-net compensator is to adjust, by means of amplification, the losses which occur due to the higher transmission frequency of the E-net.

Provided the telephone is operational, the reception field strength is displayed in 5 stages on the radio control panel and navigation unit display. The control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with hands-free system activated) are transmitted via the Medi Oriented System Transport (MOST).

The UPCI [UHI] control unit is the interface between portable CTEL and MOST.

The rechargeable battery for the portable CTEL is charged via the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface). The rechargeable battery is charged automatically as soon as the portable CTEL is inserted into the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface), irrespective of whether the portable CTEL is switched on or off.
The radio control panel and navigation unit features the following telephone functions:
^ Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identification number is entered incorrectly 3 times.
^ Speed dial
^ Dialing the emergency call even without PIN
^ Display of the name of the person called on the radio control panel and navigation unit display (if the number entered is known)
^ Display of the name of the network provider on the radio control panel and navigation unit display
^ Selection from memory lists, sorted according to
- memory location numbers
- Names (alphabetic)
- List of the 10 numbers dialed last

^ Telephone number display on the radio control panel and navigation unit display and in the multifunction display (if the telephone number has also been transmitted as radio signal)
^ Automatic muting of audio sources during a phone call
^ Direct dialing of the telephone number via the numerical keypad of the radio control panel and navigation unit, via the VCS [SBS], the MFL or the numerical keypad of the portable CTEL
^ Toggling between 2 parties
^ Keeping party on hold
^ Switching off hands-free system microphone group (A67/b1)

Address book
Telephone numbers on the subscriber identification module (SIM) card or in the telephone memory are automatically copied to the address book of the radio control panel and navigation unit. The following entries are included:
^ Name
^ Address
^ Phone numbers.
^ Manufacturer
^ Notes
^ URL

SMS
The telephone system in combination with the radio control panel and navigation unit offers the following SMS functions:
^ RECEIVED
^ Reading
^ Delete
^ Store

If editing, deleting and storing of SMS is performed on the radio control panel and navigation unit, the SMS memory of the SIM card is not affected.

Transmitted SMS messages are not stored on the SIM card. The radio control panel and navigation unit compares new SMS messages from the portable CTEL with the SMS messages in its own memory. Only different SMS messages are presented to the user.
