AR46.20-P-0600T Remove/Install Steering Gear
Remove/Install Rack-and-pinion Steering
Illustrated On Model Series 211.016:
CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts.
NOTE: See "Assessing the steering gear when repairing a vehicle damaged in an accident"
1 Move the steering column out to maximum extension
NOTE: Needed for separating steering coupling (5).
2 Deactivate easy entry and exit feature
CAUTION: Deactivate the easy entry and exit feature, otherwise the windshield may be damaged when the retainer is mounted.
3 Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and secure with holding device
CAUTION: With a disengaged steering coupling (5) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.
4 Extract oil from power steering pump supply reservoir
5 Remove front wheels
6.1 Remove bottom section of sound-proofing capsule
6.2 Remove engine compartment paneling
7 Press tie rod joints (1) out of steering knuckles
8 Detach right heat shield (2) from front axle carrier (3)
9 Detach left heat shield from front axle carrier (3)
10 Detach steering coupling (5) from lower steering shaft (6); to do this, unscrew bolt (4)
CAUTION: Installation: Replace locking plate (7) with self-locking nut. Push on the locking plate (7) until the lug locks in position in the steering coupling (5).
11 Pull the lower steering shaft (6) upward to extract it from the steering coupling (5).
CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, a lot of leverage) as the lower steering shaft (6) is sensitive to the effects of side force. The consequence would be distortion and as a result the lower steering shaft (6) would be unusable.
NOTE:
- Installation: Turn rack-and-pinion steering to center position
- Push in the lower steering shaft (6) as far as the stop in the steering coupling (5), observing the journal of the steering coupling (5) and groove in the lower steering shaft (6).
12 Separate tie straps (arrow) and disconnect plug from the SPS [PML] solenoid valve (Y10)
- Vehicles with speed-sensitive power steering (code 213a)
13 Detach bracket (8) from rack-and-pinion steering
14 Disconnect oil line retaining plate (9) from the steering rack and pull out oil lines.
NOTE:
- Seal off line connections with plugs.
- Installation: replace O-rings.
15 Support rack-and-pinion steering with telescoping transmission lifter and passenger car transmission platform.
16 Detach rack-and-pinion steering from the front axle carrier (3); for this purpose, unscrew bolts (10a) and (10b)
17 Lower rack-and-pinion steering carefully
Inspecting
18 Check rubber mount (11) on rack-and-pinion steering mounting for damage
- Replace if necessary.
19 Install in the reverse order
20 Filling and bleeding power steering pump
21 Check steering for function and leaks
22 Carry out chassis alignment check.
