^ Reads in the controls and input signals
^ Evaluating input factors
^ Actuates output media

Reads in the controls and input signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
^ Direct line
^ Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN)
^ Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)

Discrete lines
The radio control panel and navigation unit comes with the following direct connections:
- Circuit 30
- Circuit 31
- Wake-up for MOST (bidirectional)
- AUX input 1 (accessible in glove box), except code 518 Media interface

- Amplifier module 2, window antenna (A2/72) (model 211.2)
- Bluetooth antenna (A2/91)
- Microphone SBS (B25/7)

CAN
The radio control panel and navigation unit is a subscriber of the class B Controller Area Network bus (interior) (CAN-B) and communicates with the following control units, for example:
- Instrument cluster (A1)
- EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Central gateway control unit (N93)

MOST
The radio control panel and navigation unit is a subscriber of the MOST; it sends and receives control and audio signals to and from the following control units:
- Sound system amplifier (N40/3) with code 810 Sound system
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3), with code 537 Digital radio and code 833 Great Britain version
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) with code 518 Media interface

Evaluating input factors
The input factors are processed in the radio control panel and navigation unit.

Actuates output media
The following direct output signals are possible:
- Audio OUT (speakers), except code 810 Sound system
- External fan (power supply, speed control and diagnosis)
- Antenna power supply
- Media interface Universal Consumer Interface (UCI), with code 518 Media interface

Design
The radio control panel and navigation unit consists of the following components:
- Control panels for controlling the audio, navigation and telematics functions
- Digital versatile disk (DVD) drive
- Central computer
- Navigation processor
- Audio amplifier, except code 810 Sound system

Function
The following function areas are included in the radio control panel
and navigation unit:
^ Control panels and central computer
^ DVD drive
^ Navigation and global positioning system (GPS) control unit
^ Turn rate sensor (gyrosensor)

Control panels and central computer
The information of the control panel buttons on the radio control panel and navigation unit is read in and made available to the central computer. The button presses are subjected to further processing in the central computer and relayed via MOST or CAN-B in the form of telegrams.
Pressing the rotary switch on the radio control panel and navigation unit switches on the radio control panel and navigation unit. The volume for the respective set audio source is regulated by turning the rotary switch.

The function keys switch over to the audio source desired by the user.

DVD drive (with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio)
With the aid of the integrated DVD drive, data can be read from the navigation DVD or an audio Compact Disk (CD) or MPEG-1 audio layer 3 (MP3) CD/DVD can be played.

DVD changer (with code 511 Audio 50 APS with DVD changer)
Data can be read from the navigation DVD or an audio CD and an MP3-CD/DVD can be played using the integrated DVD changer (6-disk).

Navigation and GPS control unit
The navigation processor is integrated into the radio control panel and navigation unit and calculates the location of the vehicle using the incoming antenna signals. It also calculates the vehicle's route after the destination has been entered.

Turn rate sensor
The turn rate sensor determines the direction changes of the vehicle. It is installed into the navigation processor. A calibration is not required.
