The combination of the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit and the relevant UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) makes it possible to operate different portable CTELs (e.g. Motorola). In addition, it is also possible to operate devices with Bluetooth capability (e.g. laptop).
Phone calls can be made in "private mode" using a Bluetooth headset.
The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) system is provided as a complete preinstallation. In model 221 with code (396) Linguatronic-English (US) it also contains the voice control system (VCS [SBS]). In model 216, the VCS [SBS] is installed as standard.
The vehicle is equipped with the complete preinstallation comprising the following components:

The UPCI system contains the following functions:
^ Establish phone calls in hands-free mode
^ Display call numbers and caller ID
^ Display stored telephone numbers from the portable CTEL or from the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster
^ Selection of the menu item "TEL" using the system selection button via the left multifunction steering wheel button group
^ Selection of the menu item "TEL" via the front central operating unit
^ Scrolling (telephone directory function) using the scroll forward and back button via the left multifunction steering wheel button group
^ Selection of the "Accept/terminate phone call" function via the right multifunction steering wheel button group using the Accept/terminate phone call button
^ Transmission of all audio signals via the MOST
^ Voice control, voice input is made via the hands-free system microphone group. The volume of any active audio source is automatically muted during a telephone call to ensure minimum distortion to the voice input by the user via the hands-free system microphone group
^ The UPCI [UHI] system is activated using the On/Off button of the portable CTEL or automatically by a wake-up pulse over the MOST. Automatic activation can be initiated via the COMAND controller unit or the status "circuit 15 ON"
^ The UPCI [UHI] system is deactivated using the On/Off button of the portable CTEL or automatically after expiration of the run-on time set on the portable CTEL
^ Voice output is accomplished over the audio speaker system
^ Display of provider name in COMAND display.
The volume of the audio speaker system can be set individually by the user. This is possible using the MFL's integrated buttons + and - for setting specific functions and volume control or using the portable CTEL.
Several displays (e.g. "ENTER PIN"), which inform the user about the operating condition of the portable CTEL, are used to show the functions in the following components:
