Switch-on characteristics
The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) system is activated using the On/Off button on the portable CTEL (A34/6). If the portable CTEL is in the cradle and the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card has been enabled, the UPCI [UHI] system is automatically activated by means of a wake-up pulse via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). This activation can be initiated by status "circuit 15 ON" or through the COMAND controller unit (A40/3). Before the UPCI [UHI] system can be started up, it must be logged into the respective mobile telephone network (e.g. D-net or E-net). After inserting the SIM card and then activating the portable CTEL, the user must enter the 4 to 8-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) when requested to do so. This PIN prevents unauthorized use of the SIM card and therefore protects against misuse.
If the number is entered wrongly 3 times, the SIM card is barred and has to be released using the personal 8-digit Personal Unblocking Key (PUK).
This allows entry of a new PIN. If the PUK is entered wrongly 10 times in succession, the SIM card can no longer be used and a new SIM card must be applied for from the service provider. If the PIN is entered correctly, the portable CTEL logs into the respective mobile telephone network of the service provider and is ready for use.
Switch-off characteristics
The UPCI [UHI] can be deactivated using the On/Off button on the portable CTEL or automatically after expiration of the run-on time set on the portable CTEL.
The portable CTEL is decommissioned by pressing the On/Off button on the portable CTEL and then removing the SIM card.
The SIM card may only be removed after the portable CTEL has been deactivated in order to prevent permanent damage to the memory chip installed on the SIM card. When the portable CTEL is switched on again, the PIN has to be reentered.
