Function description for multicontour seat (MCS [MKS]), general
The multicontour seats (MCS [MKS]) can be adjusted individually. The contour and the surface hardness of the backrest as well as the air cushions in the side area of the backrest can be adjusted independently of each other by inflating and deflating the particular air cushions.

The compressed air supply is provided by the pneumatics pump for the multicontour seat.

Code (409) Left/right front multicontour seats
The individual functions can be adjusted with menu assistance on the front central operating unit (A40/9) and are indicated on the COMAND display (A40/8) (without code (867) SPLITVIEW) or SPLITVIEW display (A40/10) (model 216 as of YoM 09 with code (867) SPLITVIEW). Adherence to the set pressure values as well as the specified pressures of the individual cushion areas is continuously being regulated. The front central operating unit can be used to manually adjust the contours of the various air cushions in the multicontour seat by means inflation and deflation, actuated by the left front multicontour backrest control unit (N32/15) or right front multicontour backrest control unit (N32/16).

The air cushions in the front seats are arranged as follows:
- on the left-and right-hand sides of the backrest
- in the seat cushion side area at the left and right,
- in the upper lumbar area
- in the center lumbar area
- In the lower lumbar support area
- in the shoulder area at the left and right

Priorities
When several functions are requested at the same time, only the adjustment motion with the highest priority is executed.
Priority 1: Lateral backrest support
Priority 2: Lumbar support
Priority 3: Lateral seat cushion support
Priority 4: Shoulder cushion

Code (406) Rear multicontour seat (model 221 only)
The individual functions can be manually configured via the RCP [HBF] control unit (N72/2). To prevent any tension in the back during long journeys, the multicontour seat is equipped with a massage (pulse mode) function. As long as the massage function is active, the contour of the 7-layer massage insert is sequentially altered by inflating, maintaining and relieving the pressure. The massage function can be adjusted individually in 2 stages with the intense massage function button (N72/2s18) and the non-intense massage function button (N72/2s17). Maintenance of the set pressure values as well as nominal pressures of the individual cushion areas is controlled continuously by the left rear multicontour backrest (N32/20) or right rear multicontour backrest (N32/21).

The rear control panel control unit can be used to manually adjust the various air cushions in the multicontour backrest, actuated by the left rear multicontour backrest control unit or the right rear multicontour backrest control unit.

The air cushions in the backrests of the outer individual rear seats are located as follows:
- on the left-and right-hand sides of the backrest
- in the upper lumbar area
- in the center lumbar area
- In the lower lumbar support area

Priorities
When several functions are requested at the same time, only the adjustment motion with the highest priority is executed.
Priority 1: Lateral backrest support
Priority 2: Lumbar support
Priority 3: Massage function (pulsation or dynamic lumbar support)

PRE-SAFE
In critical situations, the air cushions are inflated in the side area before the imminent accident; on the front multicontour seats the air cushions in the lumbar are deflated additionally; this is accomplished to obtain a more favorable seat position and arrest the passengers' bodies. For more detailed information refer to the PRE-SAFE system description.

The multicontour seat system enables the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:
^ Adjust front multicontour seats, function
^ Adjust rear multicontour seats, function (with code (406) Rear multicontour seats only)
^ Dynamic inflation/deflation of air cushions in multicontour seat (with code (406) Rear multicontour seat only)
^ Storing and calling multicontour seat (MCS) seat position (on model 221 with code (275) Memory package for electrically adjustable front seats or with code (406) with code (276) Memory in rear or on model 216)
