If the portable CTEL (A34/6) receives a call signal via the E-net compensator (A28/3) and via the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15) on model 221 from the telephone and GPS roof antenna (A2/49) or on model 216 from the telephone and GPS antenna (A2/49), the caller is displayed in the display of the portable CTEL. This information is also transmitted to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1). The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit forwards the call signal to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) via Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).
The COMAND controller unit receives the ringing tone, converts the signal into an audio signal and sends it to the audio speaker system.
The volume of an active audio source is reduced by 15 dB. When the call is answered, an active audio source is muted and the caller ID is shown in the display of the portable CTEL, in the COMAND display (A40/8) and in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1).
The user can accept a call in one of the following ways:
^ Hands-free mode
^ Private mode
Hands-free mode
In hands-free mode, the user can accept a call in one of the following ways:
^ By pressing the "Accept call" button on the respective portable CTEL.
^ By pressing the accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) in the right multifunction steering wheel button group on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL)

^ By selecting the corresponding option in the "TEL" menu item via the telephone/navigation quick select button (A40/9s5) and the front central operating unit (A40/9)
On model 221 up to 31.8.06, voice input takes place via the 4 microphones integrated in the hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) in the inside rearview mirror unit (A67).
On model 221 as of 1.9.06 and on model 216, voice input takes place via the 2 microphones integrated in the hands-free system microphone group in the inside rearview mirror unit. Voice output takes place over the audio speaker system installed in the vehicle.
Phone calls can be made in "private mode" using a Bluetooth headset.
Private mode
In "private mode", the user makes a phone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the telephone conversation. The "private mode" is only possible with a Bluetooth headset and is activated by operating a switch on the Bluetooth headset. The phone call is terminated by operating the switch on the Bluetooth headset again. You can switch between "private mode" and handsfree mode by operating the switch on the Bluetooth headset twice (within 3 s).
