As of 1.9.2010 the legend on the transmission mode button (A40/9s8) (S-C-M) is replaced by "S-E-M".

As of 1.6.2009 the button-free programming is replaced by the rear window roller sun blind button (A40/9s13) and the mute button by the button-free programming.

Task
The front central operating unit enables the user to operate all the comfort-relevant functions.
Its tasks are as follows:
- Reading in of signals
- Transmit signals
- Human-Machine Interface (HMI)

Reading in of signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
- COU [ZBE] LIN (LIN A1)
- Telematics CAN (CAN A)

COU [ZBE] LIN
The front central operating unit is a ZBE-LIN user and connected by the center console button group (S148) (up to 31.5.2009 with code (386) Preinstallation for cell phone", Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface system or code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface USA/Canada).

Telematics CAN
The signals are read-in over the telematics CAN.
The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).

Transmit signals
The front central operating unit sends signals over the following condition:

Telematics CAN
The signals are transmitted over the telematics CAN. The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).

The rotary pushbutton can be used for the following operations:
- Press: Down vertically
- Turn: To left or right (with limit stop at start and end of menu)
- Tilt: In the horizontal, vertical and in the diagonal direction
