Permanent Speed Limiter, general
The Permanent Speed Limiter (also called the SPEEDTRONIC) is an additional function of the cruise control, which is integrated in the ESP control unit (N47-5).

The Permanent Speed Limiter allows the driver to limit the maximum speed of the vehicle (e.g. for winter tires with a lower permissible maximum speed).

The ESP control unit sends the request to decelerate the vehicle over the chassis CAN (CAN E) to the CDI control unit (N3/9) or ME-SFI control unit (N3/10)..

The ESP control unit sends a shift request for the automatic transmission over the chassis CAN and drive train CAN (CAN C) to the ETC control unit (N15/3) or electric controller unit (VGS) (Y3/8).

Permanent Speed Limiter, function sequence
Engine power is reduced as the vehicle approaches the set maximum speed.
If this is inadequate, the service brake is actuated proportionately and if necessary, the automatic transmission shifts to a lower gear so that the set maximum speed is not exceeded (e.g. in case of steep declivity).

The Permanent Speed Limiter is switched on or off using the LH or RH multifunction steering wheel button group (S110, S111) with the "Settings" menu, "Speed limiting" menu item on the instrument cluster.
If the Permanent Speed Limiter is switched on, it is activated at the same time and can be switched off or deactivated again only through the menu in the instrument cluster.

The maximum speed can be set in 10 km/h increments from 160 to 240 km/h.
The selected maximum speed is sent from the instrument cluster over the chassis CAN (CAN E) and central CAN (CAN F) to the ESP control unit.

When the Permanent Speed Limiter is activated, the segments on the rim of the speedometer below the selected maximum speed are illuminated and the others remain off.

While the Permanent Speed Limiter is active, the cruise control or Variable Speed Limiter (except code (494) USA version) can still be used up to the selected permanent maximum speed.
