Task
The ignition modules have the following tasks:
- Generate the ignition voltage (AC voltage) for each spark plug (R4)
- Set ignition angle, spark duration, ignition offset and changeover according to the signals from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) on Circuit 1.
- Detect and filter the ionic current signals, and send them to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit

Design
The ignition modules consist of a die-cast aluminum housing with plastic cover.
Each ignition module is integrated with 12 spark plug connectors (2 spark plugs per cylinder) and ignition output stage.
The spark plug connectors are not detachable.
Seals are placed at the front of the spark plug connectors to protect the ignition output stages, and these must be replaced each time the ignition modules are removed/installed.
At the front of the ignition modules are the connector plug and the electronics for the ionic current filter, the oscillator circuits with control and regulator circuit for the ignition output stages, and the switchover circuit between the voltage of 180 V approx. and the auxiliary voltage of 23 V approx.

e Filtering of the ionic current signal
For each spark plug, the oscillator circuit (coil, capacitor and resistor) with control and regulator circuit generates an AC voltage (primary voltage) from the 180 V approx. This AC voltage is stepped up to the ignition voltage (secondary voltage) by the ignition output stages in the spark plug connectors.
When ignition has ended, the switchover to the 23 volt approx. auxiliary voltage takes place. This is needed to measure the ionic currents at the spark plugs.
The ionic current signal is decoupled in the ignition module, filtered and then transferred over a screened cable to the ME control unit.
