Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

GF07.04-P-6020MLK Camshaft Hall Sensor, Component Description
- refinement package
- as of model year 09

Component Identification:

Location
The camshaft Hall sensor is located in the front at the right cylinder head.

Task
The ME control unit (N3/10) detects the ignition TDC position of cylinder 1 and synchronizes the injection and firing sequence.

Design
The camshaft Hall sensor consists of a Hall sensor cast into a plastic housing with a 3-pin plug connection.

Function
When the engine is stopped, the signal from the camshaft Hall sensor enables the quick start function.
If no signal is received from the camshaft Hall sensor, the ME-SFI control unit determines the ignition TDC of cylinder 1 randomly. The engine starts after about 1 s, and the exhaust emission values at engine start are not optimal.

The distance between the camshaft Hall sensor and the segment at the camshaft sprocket cannot be adjusted and is determined by its installation position.

Component Identification:

A voltage signal of about 12 V (high) is present on the signal line of the camshaft Hall sensor. If the segment on the camshaft sprocket passes in front of the camshaft Hall sensor, the voltage signal drops to 0 V (low). The "0 V signal" is used to detect ignition TDC in cylinder 1.
