Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

GF07.04-P-6010MLK Crankshaft Position Sensor, Component Description
- refinement package
- as of model year 09

Component Identification:

Location
The position sensor is located behind the LH cylinder head at the transmission flange.

Task
The position sensor detects the crankshaft position and engine speed for the ME-SFI control unit (N3/10).

Function
The front edge of the tooth generates a positive voltage pulse and the rear edge a negative pulse.
The gap between the positive and negative voltage peaks represents the length of one tooth.
At the gap consisting of two missing teeth, no voltage is generated in the position sensor. The ME-SFI control unit uses this gap to detect one crankshaft revolution and the TDC position in cylinders 1 and 6.

The gap between the position sensor and the teeth on the increment wheel (about 0.8 mm) is not adjustable, but is determined by the installation position.
