Power transmission, general

The term "power flow" refers to the transmission paths of driving power and engine torques. The engine torques are transmitted to the drive wheels via the mechanical-hydraulic connection of the engine, start-up clutch, the downstream automatic transmission and the differential on the rear axle.

Power in the start-up clutch is transmitted by means of the frictional connection between the internally and externally toothed plates when pressed together by the clutch piston. The pressure in the clutch piston is adjusted via the start-up clutch control solenoid valve VGS (Y3/8y9).

If the start-up clutch is engaged, then the power flows via this mechanical connection. Via the gear wheels of the individual planetary gear sets the torques coming from the start-up clutch, depending on the gear ratio and operated shift elements, are passed on to the transmission output shaft via the multidisk clutches and multidisk brakes.

A reduction of the output speed in the low gears provides lower vehicle speeds with high tractive forces and drive torques at the drive wheels.
