Function sequence for symbol illumination
The following information is read in and evaluated by the instrument cluster (A1) for controlling the symbol and function illumination:
- Status of standing lights actuation provided by the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) on the interior CAN (CAN B)
- Status of brightness control for instrument illumination (A1r1) (adjustment of symbol illumination from 0 to 100 %)

The instrument cluster uses the incoming data to generate the circuit 58d signal and transmits it via the interior CAN to the following control units to actuate the symbol illumination:
- Radio (A2) (with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer or with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio)
- Radio with Auto-Pilot-System (A2/56) with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer or code (525) Radio MB Audio 50 APS)

The front SAM control unit transmits the circuit 58d signal to the following control units via the chassis CAN (CAN E):
- CDI control unit (N3/9) (on diesel engine)
- ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (on gasoline engine)
- Steering column module control unit (N80)

The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit reads in the circuit 58d signal and transmits it via the drive train CAN (CAN C) to the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) (with transmission 722). The electronic selector lever module control unit reads in the circuit 58d signal and actuates the following components:
- Transmission mode button for automatic transmission (S16/12)
- Shift gate symbol illumination (E12)

The steering column tube module control unit actuates the following components via the steering LIN (LIN E1):
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110)
- Group of buttons on right of multifunction steering wheel (S111)

The automatic air conditioning control and operating unit actuates the symbol illumination of the integrated controls directly and sends the signal c. 58d via the climate control LIN (LIN B8) to the rear automatic air conditioning operating unit (N22/4) (with code (581) Comfort automatic air conditioning) The rear automatic air conditioning operating unit actuates the symbol illumination of the integrated controls.

The left front door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the following components.
Actuation via left door LIN (LIN B5):
- Driver-side power window and outside mirror adjustment switch group (S20)
- Left front seat adjustment switch group (S22)
(with code (275) Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirror))

Direct actuation:
- Trunk lid release button (S15/1)
(model 204.0)
- Driver liftgate control button (S15/3)
(on model 204.2/9 without code (890) EASY-PACK liftgate)
- Left front door central locking interior switch (S85/5)

The right front door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the following components.
Actuation via right door LIN (LIN B6):
- Right front seat adjustment switch group (S23)
(with code (242) Electrically adjustable front passenger seat with memory)

Direct actuation:
- Passenger-side power window switch (S21/2)
- Right front door central locking interior switch (S85/6)

The left rear door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the left rear power window switch (S21/3).

The right rear door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the right rear power window switch (S21/4).

The symbol illumination for the controls located on the overhead control panel control unit (model 204.0/2 with code (414) Electric tilting/sliding roof, glass version) is switched on when one of the vehicle doors is opened with a brightness value of 100 % regardless of whether the signal c. 58d has been received. If the status of the vehicle doors no longer changes, the symbol illumination is switched off after t = 30 s. The opening or closing of a vehicle door while this time interval is running down causes it to start again. The symbol illumination is switched off immediately when the vehicle is locked. Actuation of the symbol illumination i accordance with the status of the light sensor (B38/1) (without code (345) Rain sensor) or the status of the rain/light sensor (B38/2) (with code (345) Rain sensor) only takes place if circuit 15R is ON. For circuit 15 OFF the symbol illumination is actuated corresponding to the daytime brightness level.

Function sequence for ambiance illumination
The ambiance illumination encompasses the actuation of different components for illumination of the footwell, instrument panel and vehicle doors.
The brightness can be adjusted using the instrument illumination brightness control.

The following signals are read in and evaluated by the front SAM control unit via the interior CAN for controlling the ambiance illumination:
- Circuit 15 status or status of central locking system (CL [ZV]) by the electronic ignition lock control module (N73)
- Left front door status by the left front door control unit
- Right front door status by the right front door control unit
- Left rear door status by the left rear door control unit
- Left rear door status by the right rear door control unit
- Standing lights actuation status
- Instrument cluster ambiance illumination brightness

The front SAM control unit then transmits the request to switch on the ambiance illumination to the following control units via the interior CAN:
- Overhead control panel control unit (model 204.0/2 with code (414) Electric glass tilting/sliding roof)
- Additionally with model 204.0/2 with code (954) Avantgarde or code (955) Elegance and with model 204.9 with code (876) Interior lights package.
- Left front door control unit
- Right front door control unit
- Left rear door control unit
- Right rear door control unit

The front SAM control unit actuates the following ambiance illumination components:
- Ambient lamp (A67e3) in the inside rearview mirror (A67) via the electronic overhead control panel (without code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding roof)
- Additionally with model 204.0/2 with code (954) Avantgarde or code (955) Elegance and with model 204.9 with code (876) Interior lights package.
- Right front footwell lamp (E17/15)
- Left front footwell lamp (E17/16)

The left front door control unit actuates the left front door handle illumination (E17/11).
The right front door control unit actuates the right front door handle illumination (E17/12).
The left rear door control unit actuates the left rear door handle illumination (E17/13).
The right rear door control unit actuates the right rear door handle illumination (E17/14).
With model 204.0/2 with code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding roof, the overhead control panel control unit actuates the ambient lamp in the inside rearview mirror.

When the vehicle is unlocked using the central locking system, the ambiance illumination components are actuated with a dimmed brightness setting. If a front or rear door is now opened, the ambiance illumination components are actuated with a brightness setting that corresponds to 100%. When the front or rear door is closed or if circuit 15R is enabled, the ambiance illumination components are actuated with the current brightness setting again.

If the vehicle is locked using the central locking system, the ambiance illumination components are switched off immediately without dimming.
