The rear SAM control unit is located in the rear right of the luggage compartment.

The rear SAM control unit is located on the front crossmember in the trunk.
Task
The rear SAM control unit supplies various systems via limit
switches and supplies control units with voltage depending on the
function sequence. The rear SAM control unit also performs the
following tasks:
^ Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
^ Evaluation of input factors
^ Control of systems
^ Actuation of components
^ Switching of relays
^ Output of control signals
Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
^ Direct line
^ Local Interconnect Network (LIN)
^ Interior CAN (CAN B)
Direct line
The signals from the following components are read via a direct line:
- Left rear door rotary tumbler switch (A85/3s1)
- Right rear door rotary tumbler switch (A85/4s1)
- Left fuel level indicator sensor (B4/1)
- Right fuel level indicator sensor (B4/2)
- Trunk lid rotary tumbler switch (M14/7s1) (model 204.0)
- Liftgate rotary tumbler switch (M14/7s1) (model 204.2/9)
- Left rear backrest inclination switch (S54/5)
- Right rear backrest inclination switch (S54/6)
- Left rear backrest lock switch (S54/7)
- Right rear backrest lock switch (S54/8)
- Engine hood antitheft alarm system switch (S62) (with code (551) Antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))
- with code (889) Keyless-Go:

- Alarm siren (H3/1) (up to 31.5.10) via the rear SAM LIN B4) (with code (551) Antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))
Interior CAN
The signals are read in by the rear SAM control unit over the interior CAN.
The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant systems or components are then actuated.
Control of systems
The rear SAM control unit controls the following functions and systems:
- Battery state recognition
- Exterior lights (ABL) for vehicle rear
- Rear window defroster
- Trunk lid lock (model 204.0) or Liftgate (model 204.2/9) and fuel filler door
- Heated seats (HS) (with code (873) front left and right heated seats)
- Electric rear window roller blind (with model 204.0 with code (540) Roller sun blind)
- Antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) (with code (551) Antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))

- Liftgate windshield wiper relay (N10/2kE) (for model 204.2/9)
- Seat adjustment relay (N10/2kF)
