Function requirements, general
^ C. 30g ON or c. 15R ON
^ One mobile phone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
^ Mobile phone system operating error-free
^ Enabled Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card inserted in mobile phone
^ Mobile phone authorized at the COMAND controller unit (A40/3)

Function of setting up/ending phone call, general
The mobile phone can be used by the user to initiate or terminate a telephone call to another person in the mobile phone system network or the fixed-line network.
A phone call can be set up and ended either using:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Center console button group (S148)
- Right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Voice control of VCS [SBS] (up to 31.5.09 with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]), as of 1.6.09 standard equipment)
- Front central operating unit (A40/9)
- Rear handset (A34/16) (with code (856) 2nd handset in rear armrest)

In vehicles with code (856) 2nd handset in rear armrest, it is possible to operate a mobile phone that is authorized at the COMAND controller unit.

The "Set up and terminate telephone call" function consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence, call signal
^ Function sequence for accepting call
^ Call setup function sequence
^ Function sequence for hands-free mode
^ Function sequence for voice output
^ Call termination function sequence

Function sequence, call signal
The mobile phone receives a call signal via the following route: The telephone and GPS roof antenna (A2/49) (model 221) or the telephone and GPS antenna (A2/49) (model 216) receives the call signal.

The signal is forwarded via a direct line as follows:
Up to 31.5.09:
- with code (386) Preinstallation for telephone "Cell phone", UPCI [UHI] system and with code (228) Stationary heater:
The signals are transmitted to the telephone/cell phone/STH radio remote control antenna splitter (A2/53) and then via a direct line to the E-net compensator (A28/3)

- For code (494) USA version:
- with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface, USA/Canada:
The signals are transmitted to the frequency switchover control unit (N96) and then to the cell phone antenna amplifier (A28/2)
- without code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface, USA/Canada:
The signals are transmitted via a direct line to the cell phone antenna amplifier

The signals are received by the mobile phone via the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) cell phone holder (A34/15).

As of 1.6.09
- with code (386) Comfort telephony:
The signals are transmitted via a direct line to the E-net compensator and then via a direct line to the Bluetooth module (A34/7). From the Bluetooth module the signals are received by inserted mobile phone.

The Bluetooth module transmits the signals via a Bluetooth connection to the Bluetooth antenna (A2/91). The Bluetooth antenna transmits the signals directly to the COMAND controller unit.

- without code (386) Comfort telephony:
The signals are received by the mobile phone and transmitted via a Bluetooth connection to the Bluetooth antenna. The Bluetooth antenna transmits the signals directly to the COMAND controller unit.

The information about an incoming call is displayed on the COMAND display (A40/8) (without code (867) SPLITVIEW) or the SPLITVIEW display (A40/10) (with code (867) SPLITVIEW) and the multifunction display (A1p13). A call signal also sounds, causing the audio system to switch to "Mute".

Function sequence for accepting call
The accept call function consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Accept call function sequence via mobile phone
^ Accept call function sequence via rear handset (with code (856) 2nd handset in rear armrest)
^ Function sequence, accept call via the front central operating unit
^ Function sequence, accept call via center console button group
^ Accept call function sequence via right multifunction steering wheel button group

Accept call function sequence via mobile phone
Pressing the "Accept call" button on the mobile phone answers the call in hands-free mode. The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.

Accept call function sequence via rear handset (with CODE (856) 2nd handset in rear armrest)
Pressing the "Accept call" button on the rear handset answers the call. If the rear handset is in the rear handset holder (A34/13), the call is answered in hands-free mode.
The request to accept the call passes via a Bluetooth connection from the rear handset to the Bluetooth antenna and then to the COMAND controller unit.
Without code (386) Comfort telephony:
Communication takes place from the COMAND controller unit to the Bluetooth antenna and then to the mobile phone.
With code (386) Comfort telephony:
Communication takes place from the COMAND controller unit to the Bluetooth antenna and then to the Bluetooth module. From the Bluetooth module, communication takes place via the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) cell phone holder to the mobile phone.

Function sequence, accept call via the front central operating unit
The call is answered in hands-free mode by selecting "Accept call" using the front central operating unit.
The request to accept the call is transmitted by the front central operating unit to the COMAND controller unit via the telematics CAN (CAN A).

Function sequence, accept call via center console button group
The call is answered in hands-free mode by pressing the "Accept call" button via the center console button group.
The request to accept the call is transmitted by the center console button group to the front central operating unit via COU [ZBE] LIN (LIN A1). The front central operating unit sends the request over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

Accept call function sequence via right multifunction steering wheel button group
The call is answered in hands-free mode by pressing the Accept/terminate phone call button in the right multifunction steering wheel button group.

The request to accept the call is transmitted from the Accept/ terminate phone call button via the steering LIN (LIN E1) to the steering column tube module (N80) and via the chassis CAN (CAN E) to the central gateway control unit (N93). The central gateway control unit transmits the request via the central CAN (CAN F) to the COMAND controller unit.

Call setup function sequence
The call setup function consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Establish call function sequence over mobile phone
^ Call setup function sequence via rear handset (with code (856) 2nd handset in rear armrest)
^ Function sequence, establish call via center console button group
^ Call setup function sequence using multifunction steering wheel button group
^ Call setup function sequence via VCS [SBS] (up to 31.5.09 with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]), as of 1.6.09 standard equipment).
^ Function sequence, establish call via front central operating unit

Establish call function sequence over mobile phone
The telephone number is selected via the buttons on the mobile phone or from the mobile phone's phone book. The "Accept phone call" button is pressed. The telephone call is then established in handsfree mode.

Call setup function sequence via rear handset (with CODE (856) 2nd handset in rear armrest)
The telephone number is selected or entered using the buttons on the rear handset. Pressing the "Accept phone call" button triggers the request to set up the call.

The request to set up the call passes via a Bluetooth connection from the rear handset to the Bluetooth antenna and then to the COMAND controller unit.
Without code (386) Comfort telephony:
Communication takes place from the COMAND controller unit to the Bluetooth antenna and then to the mobile phone.

With code (386) Comfort telephony:
Communication takes place from the COMAND controller unit to the Bluetooth antenna and then to the Bluetooth module. From the Bluetooth module, communication takes place via the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) cell phone holder to the mobile phone.

Function sequence, establish call via center console button group
The telephone function is selected using the "Telephone" menu item. This takes place with the help of the Telephone/Navigation quick select button (A40/9s5) on the front central operating unit and is then displayed in the COMAND display or in the SPLITVIEW display.
The telephone number is entered using the center console button group. The call is established in handsfree mode by activating the "TRANSMIT" function on the center console button group.

The request to set up the call is transmitted by the center console button group to the front central operating unit via COU [ZBE] LIN. The front central operating unit sends the request over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

Up to 31.5.09:
The COMAND controller unit transmits the request via Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit (N123/1). The signal is transmitted by the UPCI [UHI] control unit directly to the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) cell phone holder and processed via the inserted mobile phone.

As of 1.6.09
The signals are transmitted directly to the Bluetooth antenna.
- with code (386) Comfort telephony:
The Bluetooth antenna transmits the signals via a Bluetooth connection to the Bluetooth module. The signals are further processed via the inserted mobile phone.
- without code (386) Comfort telephony:
The Bluetooth antenna transmits the signals via a Bluetooth connection to the mobile phone.

Function sequence, establish call using multifunction steering wheel button groups
The address book or the telephone book of the mobile phone is selected by pressing the system selection key (S110s3) via the selection menu in the instrument cluster (A1).

The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back in the address book or the telephone book of the mobile phone using the scroll forward and back button. The Accept/terminate phone call button can be used to establish the telephone call in hands-free mode.

The request to set up the call is transmitted from the Accept/ terminate phone call button via the steering LIN to the steering column tube module and then via the chassis CAN to the central gateway control unit. The central gateway control unit transmits the request via the central CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

Up to 31.5.09:
The COMAND controller unit transmits the request via MOST to the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit.
The signal is transmitted by the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit directly to the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) cell phone holder and processed via the inserted mobile phone.

As of 1.6.09
The signals are transmitted directly to the Bluetooth antenna.
- with code (386) Comfort telephony:
The Bluetooth antenna transmits the signals via a Bluetooth connection to the Bluetooth module. The signals are further processed via the inserted mobile phone.
- without code (386) Comfort telephony:
The Bluetooth antenna transmits the signals via a Bluetooth connection to the mobile phone.

Call setup function sequence via VCS [SBS] (up to 31.5.09 with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]), as of 1.6.09 standard equipment)
The voice control of the VCS [SBS] is activated by pressing the VCS [SBS] On button of the right multifunction steering wheel button group.
The request to set up the call is transmitted from the VCS [SBS] button via the steering LIN to the steering column tube module and then via the chassis CAN to the central gateway control unit. The central gateway control unit transmits the request via the central CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

Establishing a call is activated in the dialog with the VCS [SBS] with the help of voice commands, e.g. with the following
- Dial number
- Redial
- Read telephone book
- Listen to or delete address book
- Open or spell entries
- Landline or mobile
- Dial

A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.

Up to 31.5.09:
The voice commands are picked up by the hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) and forwarded to the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit via a direct line. The voice control of the voice control system (VCS) is used to establish the telephone call in the handsfree mode.

As of 1.6.09
The voice commands are picked up by the handsfree system microphone group and relayed to the COMAND controller unit via a direct line.
The voice control is used to establish the telephone call in hands- free mode.

Function sequence, establish call via front central operating unit
The telephone function is selected using the "Telephone" menu item, which takes place using the Telephone/Navigation quick select button on the front central operating unit, and is then indicated on the COMAND display or the SPLITVIEW display. After selecting the telephone number via the front central operating unit and activating the "TRANSMIT" function via the rotary pushbutton (A40/9s11), the telephone call is established in handsfree mode.

Function sequence for hands-free mode
Voice input is implemented as follows:
Up to 31.5.09:
- without code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]):
The voice input in hands-free mode is picked up by the hands- free system microphone group and forwarded via a direct line to the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit.
- with code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]):
The voice input in hands-free mode is picked up by the handsfree system microphone group and forwarded via a direct line to the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit. From the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit, the signals are sent over MOST to the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit.

As of 1.6.09
Voice input in handsfree mode is picked up by the handsfree system microphone group and forwarded to the COMAND controller unit via a direct line.

Function sequence for voice output
Voice output is implemented as follows:
Voice output is sent to the audio tuner control unit (N93/1) via MOST. From the audio tuner control unit, voice output takes place via direct lines.

Terminate call function sequence via mobile phone
Pressing the "QUIT" button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call. The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.

Terminate call function sequence via rear handset (with code (856) 2nd handset in rear armrest)
Pressing the "END" button on the rear handset terminates the telephone call.

The request to terminate the call passes via a Bluetooth connection from the rear handset to the Bluetooth antenna and then to the COMAND controller unit.
Without code (386) Comfort telephony:
Communication takes place from the COMAND controller unit to the Bluetooth antenna and then to the mobile phone. With code (386) Comfort telephony:

The telephone call is terminated by pressing the "Terminate call" button on the center console button group.
The request to terminate the call is transmitted by the center console button group to the front central operating unit via COU [ZBE] LIN. The front central operating unit sends the request over the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

Up to 31.5.09:
The COMAND controller unit transmits the request via MOST to the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit. Terminate call function sequence in hands-free mode
Up to 31.5.09:
When a telephone call has been terminated, the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) control unit interrupts the transmitting and receiving of mobile radio signals and data.

As of 1.6.09
Once a telephone call has been terminated, the COMAND controller unit interrupts transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals or data.
